Nurseries in San Jose area
Looking for anything in particular? I am in San Jose but always head north (in Berkeley, East Bay & Berkeley Hort and Longs and Ace in Oakland, Annie's in Richmond)
There are a several SummerWinds around here, addresses can be found on their websites, Yamagami's in Cupertino, a Payless Nursery off Aborn in East SJ.
I think we must look for the same thing;-) All nurseries you listed up here are my favorites. You may want to look into Thornhill Nusery in Oakland, Regans Nursery in Fremont, East Bay Nursery in Berkeley (great for dwarf conifers!!!). If you ever get the chance to go further north, Lone Pine Nursery (fantastic for all succulents and bonsai), Miniature Plant Kingdom (unbelievably great!!!, 1.5 million tiny little goodies!!!) are both in the Petaluma area and both have fantastic owners that really make the experience even more enjoyable. You can easily make a weekend trip just for nurseries in the Petalum area:-) Also, last but definitely not least, I am sorry I do not know the name of the nursery, but it is the first one on the left as you come down the mountain into Half Moon Bay. Exquisite!!!, beautiful, a bounty of any and every kind of plant, healthy specimens, not bad prices, and lovely opera playing as a backround in the main building:-)
Thanks so much for your ideas, I will look into them. I have never really explored the San Jose area for nurseries!!! And you may have noticed I explore just a bit:-)
If you don't mind heading a bit south of SJ, I love Sierra Azul in Watsonville (on Hwy 152, halfway between Gilroy and Santa Cruz), they have a great selection of Australian/S. African plants, along with CA natives. And I think the one you like in Half Moon Bay is probably Half Moon Bay Nursery--I think that's the first one you pass and it's another one that I try to make it to from time to time.
Regans Nursery in Fremont, East Bay Nursery in Berkeley are favorites. Stopped at Lone Pine but they wer closed that day so will try another time. Love the Half Moon Bay Nursery!! I don't do mini plants, but sure appreciate them! I still ahve to check out Magic Gardens in Berkeley. Some of my favorite shopping haunts are the UC Berkeley and SF Arboretum plant sales, you get notices of the sales by signing up for them at their websites.
Hi pawny! I haven't been to Thornhill Nusery in years and years. Isn't that up in Montclair? What do they have, any specialties?
Hi Kell,
I think Japanese Maples would be their specialty, but just walking around there with the creek and the mature oaks relaxing throughout the nursery is just beautiful. And if you get lucky and go there on a cool misty winters day, they may have a wood fire burning in the fire place. Perfect get away, so close.:-)
ecrane3, thanks!!! I shall check out the one in Watsonville. I have a few South African plants already, but can always use more:-)
In Union City / Niles area is Mission Adobe - sometimes it's a mess , but worth stopping at . The prices aren't home depot - but not expensive either .
Not really worth a special trip - but if you go to Reagans - it's worth stopping and looking . They do have a distressed plant area where you can find some good deals on plants that have quit blooming for the year .
I do love Carlmont nursery. They aren't easy to find and they specialize in maples but have a lovely stock of other things.

Yamagami's on DeAnza Blvd in Cupertino (just off Highway 85) is a good nursery with many perennials. They get stock from Annie's Annuals too. Knowledgeable staff that will answer questions.
