Time to dig them up! Which ones need to stay warm?

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL you guys! You obviously haven't seen MY yard yet!! Wahhhhhh...I wanna be Chele's neighbor!!! We could have so much fun!! I could show her how to plant 7 acres for sure!!! Well...at least 6 of them!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Marcy! In just a short time you'll both be neighbors, the way you both plant your gardens so full!LOL
I enjoy the planting, but just hate the digging back up!!!!
I still haven't finished digging my bananas and brugs yet,the temps have fallen down to 37* several nights now, with no damage to them, hoping to keep them in as long as possible.
7 acres,that would be one heck of a greenhouse!!!!LOL

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Forgot to mention,it's after midnight and still 62* outside!!!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

See i just dont get your oF business. I confuses me to death. I never know if i'm planting stuff or digging it up reading your replies! Lol

If it helps its about 12oC here. Being English i could talk all day about the weather. Its our national pastime!

Hey Tropic! What was that about the fingers? Think that means something else where i'm from! Lol What a rude young man! Lol
When i'm mixing chems its more like one eye shut and the other closed heheheh

Ounces ??? where am i?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

-1 C here right now..brrrrrrrrrrr.......

Two fingers mean several things here also. LOL!
In liquor though it is the width of two fingers, but if you're a hard drinker it 'could' be the length! lol

This pic is a little brighter but I bet the outlook isn't. booo hooo

It's a balmy 35 right now (about 3C). It still doesn't feel horribly cold but I didn't stay out too long. ;)

Could you imagine about ten of us on a 100 acre spread or so?? Wouldn't THAT be a site?? LOL

We got it hard here yesterday and this morning.
Good news is the trees are still leafed out so everything under them was protected.
Looks like the same up at your place.
Better news is NO deep cold for at least a week so the plants can come out from under wraps...........!!!

Today was our first frost. Some of the canna and hibiscus and such had a bit of dark coloring to them but were still firm and green. I'm betting I'll have a fair amount of black mush here in a bit. LOL

I've been racking my brain to decide how to store stuff and had the sad realization a bit ago that I could have built a storage building out of cinder block rather quickly, inexpensively and now I am kicking myself. Geesh!

I can say my greenhouse is full to capacity. hahahaha Once it warms back up a bit, I'll be cutting a bunch of stuff back so it won't take up so much room.

Did you see Don talking dirty up there? Ewwww!

Fayetteville, PA(Zone 6b)

We had our first frost on Friday morning, and have had frosts every morning since (including a heavy one this morning and yesterday). What surprised me is this: The heavy frost Sunday morning hit one of my hardy bananas (killed almost all the leaves) and my three Abyssinian bananas, yet the Amorphophallus konjac that were BESIDE two of the abyssinian bananas were pretty much unfazed, and my Canna "Futurity Rose" and some Colocasia 'Pink China' (Hardy EE's from Brian Williams) were also untouched, despite being only about 3-7 feet away from the hardy banana that got zapped. Either these are really hardy Cannas and EE's (well, the Pink China Colocasia is root hardy to about -10 or so), or there is some wierd microclimate effect going on... The bananas I have downwind of my mature bambo grove were untouched, with the exception of my Musella lasiocarpa, which was just past the South end of the grove, so it was more exposed. I also had some nearby Colocasia "Big Dipper" that were also untouched.

As expected, my palm trees (T. fortunei, T. takil, R. hystrix and S. minor 'Mc Curtain') were completely unfazed.... As were my Aspidistra elaitors and Cordyline australis.... I went around yesterday and mulched everything in good with about 6 inches of oak leaves (courtesy of raking my grandma's yard), so they should be nice and toasty for the winter... My hardy palms look like small leaf piles with palm fronds sticking out. LOL

Anyone else have any "damage reports" to give?

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

To what zone are those palms hardy?

Fayetteville, PA(Zone 6b)

They all are *supposedly* hardy to zone 6a, however, they have been successfully overwintered at the 2 Lazy2 P alpine test gardens in Colorado Springs, CO with very minimal protection (just a canvas tent during the coldest weather, which only had a 5 degree difference between the inside temp and outside temps.

The S. minor 'Mc Curtain' has been documented to survive -24 degrees F in Wichita during the really ugly winter of '89 (we had -20* temps around here), and the R. hsytrix survived a low of -20 in Knoxville, TN during the same winter, however, I wouldn't expect them to survive that kind of abuse on a yearly basis (although the S. minor 'Mc Curtain' has survived with little or no damage without protection in Colorado Springs, CO when temps get below -10).

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I think hardiness isnt just about temperature as her it doesn't get that cold but its very wet and cold with long periods of low light levels. So things you guys grow no problems at lower zones i struggle with.
I counter some of this like my cordyline and hardy palm bed i added lots of sand and planted under a big cedrus tree for shelter. The Phoenix canariensis still lost most of its leaves and the cordyline looked really poorly after last winter and i only measured minus 15oC at the lowest for one night.
