Epilobium/Zauschneria California Fuchsia

Ukiah, CA(Zone 8b)

How many of you out there grow this plant? It is arguably the showiest of the California native plants, especially for late season color. Here is mine, which I think is Bowman's Hybrid, but it could be Catalina (I hate that I don't know for sure, but I can't remember, and can't find the tag) I will post other shots of it so you can see the form. It is an upright Epilobium, and this is its second growing season. It has invaded the Six Hills Giant Catmint next to it, so I may need to divide it next Spring.

Your photos have made the decision for me - to get Epilobium californica from Las Pilitas.

I'm thinking about this one...

I think we live in similar climates, in fact, I have the Six Hills Giant as well, but where I've got it, it is too shady. Ukiah is close enough, considering how far everything is from here, to be neighbors! :-)

It would be great if all your threads with these photos were linked or combined into one. Thanks for sharing them!

I got a small plant from the San Francisco Arboretum about four years ago because it attracts hummers. Boy! does it. Today I saw one persistant fellow hitting every blossom. Since it is cold now, not much else is blooming. Do you trim it back after it blooms?

Hi bksmall,
I don't touch it after the bloom is spent, but the first hard frost will burn it back. Just let it go dormant and cut it back in late winter. You should see new growth from the crown as the days begin to warm.
Cheers,
Mendo

Thanks, Mendo! You are just in time with the advice. It is a great addition to the garden right now. I want to keep it going since no one up here seems to know about it.
