October Morning Glories

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

I'm a vegetable gardener, and I seldom plant flowers - but I like to have morning glories on our fences.

This spring I ordered a pack of "Clark's Heavenly Beauty" seeds and planted them by my garden fence. They are really blooming now in early October - and you can see that they've taken over the garden gate now, too.

Last year, I got a pack of "mixed color" morning glory seeds from Lowe's or somewhere, and planted them on a short fence by our barn. This past spring I let the volunteer seedlings grow, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are still many different colors. I half-suspected they would all go back to white, or something. I have no idea what varieties these are.

My pepper plants are pretty much finished for this year, but I get a kick out of the way the "mixed" morning glories are now using them for a trellis.

WOW!!! Nice

those seeds take forever to ripen. I have a tree full and the early blooms are still not having ripened pods.

Thanks for the attaboys. As Windy said, those Heavenly Beauties are very slow to ripen seeds. They've been blooming all summer, and I haven't found a dry seed pod yet.

So far, one person here D-mailed me requesting seeds, and I want to save some for myself too. I wonder what would be the best way to collect a bunch of seeds?

That fence is on one side of my vegetable garden, and I have the ground in the garden all mulched with brown grass clippings. I'm thinking maybe I won't till that mulch under yet, near the morning glories, and stake down a sheet or tarp under them to catch everything that falls. What do you think?

Why not just start loudly singing a modified work song of the 7 dwarves from Snow White..."Heigh Ho, heigh ho, it's off to pick seed capsules I go.........." and enjoy the fresh air far away from it all; it could work, yes? Think how you'd impress your neighbors with the yodeling too!

Ozark, sounds like too much work to me. Just check ever few days for signs of
ripening. The seed capsule will turn light to dark tan and finally a light brown.
The seed pod will shatter when you pluck it so be sure and hold 1 hand underneath
the pod. Label a couple of envelopes or quart size baggies so you don't have to remember which seed is which. Your mixed look like mxd purpureas.

Joseph, see what happens when we don't take our medicine. LOLOLOL
However I find that I have lots more fun everyday then those people who take
their meds. Now don't get peeved at me. All in fun.

Jackie

What, me peeved? Don't worry be happy it has been a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng week! LOL

Since we're havin' fun here, I'll post the LAST picture I took yesterday when I was out there photographing morning glories.

This little guy was watching me, and he was sure I didn't see him hiding behind that leaf. He was wrong.

I came by this forum and just about fell out of my chair!!! That is the prettiest display of MG's I have ever seen. Mine never cover up with blooms like that. Oh my I am so jealous. LOL

Ozark - The mix is very nice...although I am partial to the very light blue on in the right side of the photo...you might want to consider tagging some of the blooms with colored thread so you can collect some seeds that are separated as to color...the light blue and maybe the pink will have light colored seeds and most of the others will probably have dark colored seeds...just a thought

Walt Disney was on his med's although it was a form a self-medication often available in the various chinatown areas and not exactly legal...but look what came out of it...

I like Joesph's chanting and yodeling suggestions >to help foster a happy creative state of being...

The turtle is adorable. He thinks that little leaf is hiding him...so cute!

The heavenly blue picture brings back memories. They were the first morning glories I tried and they are the reason I started growing More of them!

what a show oz...Heavenly's are my favorites- they show up so nice. I've Grandpa Otts (major reseeders) but my Heavenly never reseeds. I end up buying new seeds every couple of years.
