Cotinus coggygria 'Ancot' GOLDEN SPIRIT

Plano, TX(Zone 7a)

Hi,

I am planning to get one of these, but before I buy it I want to know if it retains its chartreuse-yellow foliage in the TX heat. I bought a Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' that was a deep purple when I got it last year from a nursery (grown in a greenhouse), and this year it is more green than purple, and the nursery guy said that this was due to the TX heat, and that it need cool weather to get the deep purple color.

Does anybody have any information on growing this in hotter locations?
Any information appreciated.

thanks

I could be wrong, but since nobody else has given you any thoughts yet I figured I'd jump in! I don't believe the gold or chartreuse colored foliage is as sensitive to heat/sun/humidity as some of the purple colored varieties. With the purple ones, often the foliage starts off greenish and needs the right conditions in order to turn purple, but I think the gold colored foliage starts off that way and stays that way, so climate shouldn't impact it as much. No personal experience to speak of though! I have grown C. coggygria 'Royal Purple' though and have not found its foliage color to be as touchy as some of the other purple plants, so that's probably a good sign too.

I have 'Golden Spirit' but I'm in Chicago. It was super hot here and mine was beautifully yellow-green colored most of the summer and then it turned a really clear grass-green for the remainder of the year. I have it in direct sun. It's now beginning to tinge orange. It's an awesome plant that gets more attention by curious neighbors than my purple colored one.

Thanks for the replies.
I will wait for these to go on sale as they are pretty pricy now.

thanks,
