Butternut.......

Ellijay, GA(Zone 7a)

Found a tree today which has much larger nuts than usual....It was located on a stream bank and many of the fruit had been swep away by a swiftly flowing stream.......Here's a pic of some pic of some of the husked nuts!

Lookin' good!
I've never yet encountered a butternut in the wild - and conversations with a local 4-H parent who's been a consulting forester covering this end of the state for the past 25 years indicated that he'd never seen one either.
I've had some sent to me by friends & acquaintances - but I've never eaten one; I've planted every viable seednut I've been able to get my hands on.
Some of my seedlings - from a friend who has a large collection of grafted butternut, heartnut, and Japanese walnut selections - may be hybrids of butternut with Japanese walnut or its budsport, the heartnut. Recent DNA tests have shown that a number of blight-resistant 'butternut' cultivars which have been propagated for decades, as pure butternut, are in fact, hybrids...so, the future of the butternut, with regard to blight/canker resistance, is here.
