Viburnum dilatatum and cvs.

Peoria, IL

Anyone have any comments on their favorites, especially for the Zone 5 parts of the Midwest? Does Cardinal Candy really not need a pollinator? Ok, ok. How about 'Asian Beauty?' I have found it to be the best shaped (taller than others however) and with good fruit, perhaps not as showy as 'Erie' and ilk but nice full cymes. Pictured: 'Catskill.'

Thanks in advance,
Ernie

Ernie:

Erie has done exceptionally well for me, blooms, fruits, vigor, etc. Great plant. Michael Dodge as well. The others have been plagued with some sort of (fungal?) disease that kills off whole stems right to the ground, or even the whole plant. I do have one Catskill that has escaped the plague, but my other one is half dead. Asian Beauty died off, Cardinal Candy lost half its branches. Oneida and Iriquois do fine.

The related V. wrightii, V. cotinifolium, V. hupehense, V. ichangense, V. burejaeticum, and Emerald Triumph have fared much better.

I think 'Cardinal Candy' will fruit without a pollinator however I believe when I was picking out the Viburnum that I wanted to purchase that although fruit set was not dependent upon a pollinator it was greater in the presence of another pollinator. Maybe try another V. dilatatum cultivar? V V and Kevin would both know the answer to this question in their sleep.

In answer to your question about favorites, I have too many.
Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin'
V. cassinoides
V. nudum ‘Winterthur’
V. ‘Count Pulaski’
V. ‘Chicago Lustre’
V. ‘Northern Burgundy’

These are wants that I screwed up acquiring but they should do well in our zone and I just know that if I had them growing here they would be favorites-
V. rafinesquianum
V. rufidulum
V. molle
V. edule

Neat thread here-

Oops, that's what I get for walking away from the computer then coming back and clicking send. Kevin already posted.
