Transplanting a live oak or maple

Daphne, AL

Hey First post here!! I want to bring home a couple of live oak or maples that are growing at a landclearing job I just started. I have my pick of numerous trees of both species from 2-6 inches. They are not in our way, and I will be on this job for about 3 weeks, so I can wait on the right weather to dig them up if that matters. The ground is very dry right now. I think they were all all planted as potted plants several years ago. What are the odds of one surviving?? Should I go for the smaller ones? I dont have a spade just a large trackhoe and a 16ft trailer to haul them home with. Thanks!!

I would definately go for the smaller ones. Try to get the biggest rootball possible. I'm not sure about using a backhoe, that may do more damage than good. I usually try to wait until after the first frost to transplant trees, so you'd be better waiting until the last day on that job. It wouldn't hurt to water it the day before digging it. That way it won't be water logged. After you get it out of the ground, wrap the rootball in some wet newspaper or a wet towel until you get it home.

I notice you are a new member, welcome to DG! I'm not to far from you, I travel through Daphne pretty often.

We have had excellent luck in Louisiana moving large live oaks. One big one that was moved at Longue Vue House and Gardens in 1949 is thriving on the grounds.
One important thing is to keep it well watered after it is transplanted, trunk, branches, leaves and all--every day for a while if it is hot.
Good luck to you.
