Do you love bamboo?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I was reading, watching and drooling over the 'boo posted here.
Especially Bambusa lako. ABSOLUTELY Gorgeous!

Looking thru my shots I ran into a Yellow Groove stem shot.
Bear in mind this was taken in February.
The color is a bit bleached out.

A tip for the northern gardeners:
If you want a more tropical bamboo look, trim the lower branches off up to about 3 1/2 feet from the ground.
Also thin out the small canes in the middle of the clump.

Growin, your friend has a great catalogue of plants. You must love visiting and just learning all about them.

We need pictures, Mike.

Boy I just really, really need to get some bamboo for me. LOL I am so limited in space though I will have to pick wisely.

This site has great Regional Recommendations

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Thanks Growin, I will definately have to check that one out. Bookmarking the site. I am getting a collection of nurseries I will want to visit up there, would love to see Thomas Hobb's Southlands Nursery, I have both of his books and they are my favorites, awesome images and my kind of tropical look, bold plants along with succulents.

Maybe you guys can help me. I'm clueless when it comes to bamboo but this plant is growing down the side of my house I never paid much attention to it , I figured it was a palm runner from somwhere but the stalks kind of looks more like a bamboo. Is it palm, bamboo or maybe bamboo palm.

Heres the whole plant, the leaves look more like a palm.

Calif_Sue, I'd be much obliged to show you some of the nurseries and tell you the "who's who" in town. Thomas Hobb's has great books and a neat nursery. I've added quite a few plants to PF over the past month so be sure to take a look as they are from VanDusen Botanical Gardens and UBC Botanical Gardens. I also do propagation and assist Tropic to Tropic plants so I'm kinda partial to what I grow. I'm tryin' to get him signed up as a DG sponsor. Unfortunately bamboo can't be shipped to the US for some obsure reason.

Kell, I'm more hands-on and get in there and do the digging, potting, seeding, cuttings, etc. We're coming up to bamboo digging season so I guess I'll be working on my biceps.

Mike, interested how your Moso is doing as they never really prosper here and I've never figured out why. I'm not sure if we just don't get hot enough or whatever but it doesn't seem to be winter temperatures.

That sure looks like a Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea sp.) http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54938/index.html

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Thank you looks like it to me. Didn't figure I'd be so lucky to have stray bamboo growing, but the palms show up everywhere down here. do you know if there's a bamboo that's more suitable for growing in a pot for zone 11.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I'd contact this nursery: http://www.tropicalbamboo.com/

Cheers, I could be in trouble here, another collection is all i need right now.

Fayetteville, PA(Zone 6b)

Henry, I've never had to prune the lower branches off my bamboo, mainly because the lowest branches are about 8 ft up.... In addition, I don't have a bunch of skinny stems in the middle of the grove. Why? Simple: My bamboo is growing in a deciduous woodlot, which just happens to be a close approximation of its natural habitat. Phyllostachys aureosulcata grows as an understory plant in Beech forests in N. China, and some of the best looking groves I've seen around here are ones that are growing in or at the edges of wooded areas, where they get some shade. The ones in the woods (including mine) also fare better during the winter and have less leaf bleaching/burn during subzero cold....

Celt, that plant in your pic is definitely Bamboo palm (Chamaedorea something or other).

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Celt, oh c'mon, a collection is good for the spirit! You're on a roll. They seem to be specialized and knowledgable so a quick phone call would probably answer your questions.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

if you saw my growing Philodendron, Alocasia, and Colocasia collection not to mention my variegated plants and palms you'd know why I need to be wary about another collection. LOL. I need to leave more time for my yoga to take care of the spirit.

But I think I do need a Buddah Belly bamboo, maybe just a little Black one and just one Variegated one.

H_T,
Mine's only half the age of yours so I'm still getting lower branches and some slim culms yet.
The newest though are throwing culm in the 1 1/2" range and branches at about 4' so there is hope for it yet. lol
All my 'boo are under storied beneath Maple and Oak.
I wish I HAD your setup!
I'm on 1/8th acre so I have to be pretty severe about where I let it go.

For those looking for a hardy small/mid-size variegated 'boo....here's Pleioblastus Variegatus.
It's planted in the Yellow Groove grove.

LOL. I was considering spending a month in California this winter. Just need to figure out where the cheap vintage travel trailers are at. My favourite is propagation but nursery stuff follows a close second.

I just love that Blue Himalayan Bamboo.

OK guys, I realise this doesn't compare with the big boys but I just couldn't leave it behind at HD.
It's being sold as a miniature bamboo, 'Pogonatherum variegata' but on researching it i realise its probably a grass rather than a bamboo but hey it looks like bamboo, its variegated, small and fits in a pot , I managed to fill the bamboo and variegated need without too much trouble. Still trying to find out the name of the large variegated one I saw in Ft Lauderdale, but I wont be back there for a coupple of weeks.

Now where to put it. :@)

It says its from Rota Island & Guam

Ah all bamboos are grasses but not all grasses....lol

As it looks like 'boo, is hardy in your area and NOT invasive I'd say you have a winner!
Any dwarf 'boo of that height would have Key West overrun in a decade!

NICE choice!

Ric

That looks cool but I'd take the blower to it to get rid of the dead leaves.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OH NO
I shoulda known you guys would find a hardy tall bamboo
now I gotta buy some.....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just got an email from Sherry Wright the Office Manager of Bamboo Sourcery.
http://www.bamboosourcery.com/

She has been helping me ID my bamboo pictures. The one I took at the SF Arboretum, she said is the same as Sue's picture though Sue's is so blue. In a way I am sad becuase I wanted one of each. LOL
