Golden chain and yellow Plum

Benton City, WA(Zone 6a)

I have a golden chain and a yellow plum in pots. I bought them in the middle of the summer and am wondering if I should of planted them when I got them, which was very hot. I'm wondering if they would be alright left in their pots and set in the ground in my greenhouse-non heated-for the winter. I would put some mulch around them. I'm afraid if I put them in the ground now they would get frozen before they can send their roots deep. Or should I bring them in the house?

The golden chain (Laburnum) should be fine with a planting now. Keep it moist, plant with decent well-draining but fertile soil and if the weather gets really bad, use some poles and wrap with burlap to keep the worst off. In my opinion, now is a good time. You can also buy some root-starter fertilizer to get the roots going.

I would add that you did the right thing by not planting them when the weather was very hot--that creates a lot of stress for plants so they're much better off if you wait until cooler weather. My guess is that the plum would be OK to plant now too since they go dormant for the winter anyway, but since I don't live anywhere near your zone I would wait for a second opinion before you do anything!

Since putting these in the greenhouse just a few days ago, they are showing signs of new growth. Especally the plum. It looks like it budding out.
