Squirrel in my fireplace

We have a crazy squirrel behind the glass folding doors of our fireplace. He(she)was throwing himself against the glass pane trying to get out. We went outside and looked up a few minutes later and he was sitting atop the fireplace. My dh has not been home to put a cover on top yet. I just got home and smelled soot and looked over at fireplace and the guy was successful at getting it partially open. Dusty/sooty stuff all over the floor. I have a huge flower pot against it now so it will not budge. If we build a fire we will have roasted squirrel fur et al smelling up the place. I wonder if there is a family there. I wish I could leave for a few days and tell dh to fix it and I will be back asking no questions.
