Signs of Hallowe'en :)

Not yet Betty but am thinking this weekend we will be trying it. Where did you get your musquee de Provance?

I think I got it from Cook's Garden. But next time I will try SSE or Bakers, to see if I get the right thing.

Thank you for letting me know. :) I took a chance and ordered a few from a supplier that doesn't have much feedback.......I'll be sure to put my feedback in the Watchdog when they ripen next summer (good or bad ;)

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I would have put my feedback in but I am not 100% sure it was Cook's garden. Still, I trust SSE and Bakers very much. It is always good to give feedback on seed sellers that we don't have much info in Watchdog.

Yep that's what I think too........I did notice your *think* up above so figured you weren't sure. The one I ordered from had a few that I hadn't seen elsewhere but, of course, were out of those when I ordered from them. I went ahead with a smaller order but am now a little leery about it.

So far I like Bakers and SSE very well. I just got a very interesting gift of squash from a friend of mine. She is a Mexican immigrant, but her father is still in Mexico where he is a farmer. He grew 10,000 lbs of squash this year. She couldn't identify the squash in any of my books, but she says it looks like a pumpkin but is green. Anyhow, this squash is used to make candy. He father is currently visiting so he brought her some pieces of the pumpkin -- which it is okay to do if you clean it and scrape out the seeds. She has made them into candy and she brought me a peace. She says I can make it out of the galeux. My husband and I will try it tonight. If we like it, I will ask for her recipe. I can't wait. I will let you know what I learn.
I just returned from a trip to the area where her father lives and did see squash for sale, but couldn't possibly have put anything else in the car. For details see my post on the Travel and Vacation forum. No plant pictures yet, but some nice pictures of Mexico.
Will report on pumpkin candy tomorrow.

"pumpkin but is *green*." Ooooooooooooooooooh Betty would you happen to have 5 spare seeds or it??? :) Or please, please, please bag a couple of blossoms next summer. This northern witch (only at Hallowe'en folks ;) would love to be able to grow a few to decorate her front doorstep.

@ work now but will be admiring your pics of Mexico tonight when I have time to study them carefully (and drool....there's heat and COLOUR down there ;).

Alas, my friend's father had to leave the seeds of the green pumpkin behind in order to get it across the border. I have none and would like very much to have some. Maybe I will look on line for a Mexican seed company that has such a pumpkin. My friend would, no doubt, identify it.

Yes, Mexico was warm, mostly not hot, and very pleasant. As we drove north I got colder and colder -- probably nothing like Moose Jaw, but cold for my taste. Not many edibles are left in my garden. Just brussels sprouts ( yum), spinach, a little chard, and some beets and carrots.

Thanks I knew I remembered it but couldn't remember from where!

Betty I'm sorry I didn't reply to the above......one of the dangers of peeking at Dave's at work is I don't always have time to reply and I forget to come back later. I hope you have luck tracking the seeds for that green pumpkin down.

I'm positive Moose Jaw's winter wouldn't be your cup of tea. ;)

Yep I'm tickled pink to have all these wonderful recipes.......I just have to get the nerve up to cut my beauties. ;)

I just received an email from a fellow squash grower in Germany......he is sending seeds for this beauty:

Wow! That almost looks like one that my aunt grows in Germany. She brought seed over ~15 years ago. We grew a few up at Tahoe. They were great. Unfortunately my mom didn't save any of the seed. They were fed to the squirrels.

Wow, lilypon, that is one cool squash. I have no clue where you could get seeds for it commercially. Do you know its name?

Unfortunately I don't ....... he just sent me the above picture when he contacted me about the trade (he knew I wanted dark squash). A lady in BC has sent me a number of varieties of heirloom tomato seeds so I'm sending 1/2 of the above package to her. Hopefully, if my season isn't long enough for at least one fruit to mature, hers will be. I hope I'll have some seeds to trade next year. :)

By then I'll also know if it comes true to that picture as well. ;)

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

How big does it get? The picture looks like Blue Kuri, a small 2-3 lb squash. Does not appear to have enough ridges to be Queensland Blue which is in the 10-20 lb range.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I have no idea FarmerDill but am sure grateful for a couple of possible names (I'm guessing by your description it is the Blue Kuri tho). When I grow it out I'll let you know how big mine got (and will take a number of pictures.....re colour). I suppose it could also be a cross as it seems to have more warts than the Blue Kuri (but I haven't grown either so I guess the proof will be the pumpkin;).

I may just purchase the Blue Kuri just to compare the two.

I am still working on tracking down the seeds of the big green pumpkin my friend told me about. It comes from Chihuahua and tonight I found some very good pictures of Squashes from Mexico -- Chihuahua and neighboring states. I bookmarked them and will show them to her next time she comes over. Maybe we will have a break through. I looked up a recipe for Pumpkin Candy and found out it can be made with any Candy. My friend says it can be made with Galeux.

Crossing fingers for both of us then Betty.....that you will find yours and that mine will make it through the postal system OK (earlier today I had visions of the black pumpkin seeds being crushed by the mail sorting machines). :S

I have also worried that seeds would be crushed by the mail sorting machines, but it doesn't seem to happen. Seeds always arrive intact, both from friends and seed companies. I also worry about irradiation, but it doesn't seem to happen.
