I have found a zillion clusters of seed pods but they are not ripe yet. If I break these off the vine will they ripen anyway, or do they have to ripen on the vine and then drop off? Thanks again for everyone's help. ~ Sherry
seed pod question
It depends on how mature they are. It is always best to let them stay on the vine to ripen. If you just want to clean up some vines stricken by the cold but do not want to loose the seeds it is possible to put the cut ends of the vines in some water just like a flower arrangement and recut the ends every two or three days and keep them in the water. I have done that with some that were within a week of ripening as they were beginning to turn brown and papery but not quite ready yet. It worked fine and the seeds sprouted and grew vines with no problem.
It is much better to just pull the spent vines out of sight hiding them behind a bush or trellis and let the pods ripen.
