How do I find a local lily society? What is main society?

Lindenhurst, NY

I've been doing searches for new york lily society and long island lily society and coming up with nothing.

Is NALS the main lily society? I'm confused, please point me in the right direction
Thanks

Thanks Moby, I'm shocked that De and MA are the closest to NY?? I was hoping there was a local one I could join and get in on some of the bulb sales I have heard other lily growers talk about.

Thanks for the map, it's very helpful.

Yeah, I understand ~ I belong to the Iowa Society. Have to travel 3 hours to get there but that's where all the fun people are. ;) (several DG members)

Have you tried looking into local gardening clubs? If you have a nursery that sells a good selection of lily bulbs, try asking around and maybe you'll find some kindred spirits.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Maureen- I wondered the same thing a few months back. There is an active lily society in NW Wisconsin, but none , that I am aware in Southern WI. It would take me at least 3 hours, likely more to go up there for meetings.
So what I am saying is....I feel your pain.
I did join the Pacific Northwest Lily Society, because of the bulbs they offer, spring & fall. Pard says it is a good one too. It's a start...

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Minnesota has a great society too and awesome bulbs sales http://www.northstarlilysociety.com/

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

MN looks good. Wish it wasn't such a long haul. Do these places mail order the sales or not? Do you know?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I believe PNW does ship but MN does not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. There's a nice handful of DG members around the Mpls area ~ wouldn't that make a nice weekend trip? Maybe you could sweet talk one of them in to sharing some sale bulbs?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Yes, it would make a nice weekend trip. I think it's 5 or 6 hours there from here. We do take other car trips equal in length.... so....maybe..
Oh, do you think some kind soul would share in the sale bulbs? Their list was pretty nice.

Lindenhurst, NY

Magnolialover - yes, someone told me about he PNW society and I am joinging, but I wouldn't be able to get in on the fall bulbs so I figured I would wait till winter then join and get in on the spring sale. I've seen some of Norths's seedlings that came from that sale and I was crazy about them --- so amazingly beautiful.

Maybe I could bribe someone go get me a few and I would pay them??? Please?? with sugar on top?

Thank you all so much Moby and Magnolia lover.

Hee Hee. That didnt take long did it Maureen. Its called "reeling you in".

Our society (Manitoba Regional Lily Soc.)has a mail order system too. With our distances, people just cannot travel 3 or 4 hours each way. After we have set up,the night before the sale, all the mail orders are pulled.

Our iris society has a mail list as well.

Tell you what Maureen, if indeed I get in on this year's PNWLS fall sale, I will do that for you. I sent my dues in and they said I might have made it in on time. To be continued..... :0) Cross your fingers...now for both of us addicts!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well magnolia if they don't let you in on it I will drive the 100 miles up there and slap them all silly for you.

Lindenhurst, NY

Inanda, yes I've been reeled in at lightning speed (lol)
magnolialover - that is so sweet of you!! When did you mail in your dues?
Connie - you are so funny!
hve a good night everyone, I'm hitting the sack

Oh, you're most welcome, Maureen. Just doing my small part to drag you down to the depths where the rest of us reside.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Pard! I hope we won't need to put the miles on your vehicle LOL! Mailed my stuff in over a week ago. They did give me hope of getting in on this fall sale, otherwise I would have waited. Just waiting to hear. Hey Pard, did you get the catalog yet? Still crossing my fingers....

Lindenhurst, NY

Moby - I would love to hang out in the dredges with you all;-)

Mag - I hope you get the catalog.

I took a chance and sent a membership form via Priority mail (cost 4.05 for a letter size envelope???) I emailed the person in charge of membership and told them I was rushing it to them in the hopes of somehow getting in on their fall sale. I also signed up for a 2 yr membership to show good faith.

Have a good day everyone

Maureen- I MADE THE DEADLINE!!!! They e-mailed and said they mailed it out yesterday! Let me know what you hear. I really meant it when I said I'd help you order, if you don't get in on time. Deadline is Oct.18, I hear.
Pard-We saved the miles on your vehicle! Hooray! Did you get your catalog yet?
I am very happy & excited about this! My first lily society membership. I can hardly contain myself!

Lindenhurst, NY

Mag - your not going to believe this. They emailed me today and said that if I emailed them my address right away they would get a catalog in the mail to me. So now I have to wait until the catalog arrives in the mail. I wonder if anyone has gotten their catalog yet??? I must know what's in there!!! Not that I would know by reading it since I'm so new, but still want it just the same! I can't tell you how much I appreciate you offering to help me out Mag, I owe you for that!! I can hardly contain myself too!!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Kinda late getting in on the thread here.

Minnesota sales do not mail order. But membership is only $10 for two years. And member get a 10% discount on bulbs. You can even join right on the spot, at the sale. Mag, if you still feel the desire after you make your PNW order, I could shop for you and send them. But you have to become a member if you want that discount!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Lefty, You are great. Thank you for offering. Does MN have a list on-line to view? The dues are very inexpensive. Wow. I wonder if I should join? Moby's got me thinking it's a great :0) weekend trip. How do you like MN Lily society?
Maureen-Hooray for you! We can share our excitement. I wonder if they are thinking some lily disease is perpetuating with our e-mails. I'm hoping mine comes tomorrow, unless it took the pony express!lol.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Mag, you would like NSLS. There are two education meetings (like tomorrow), a fall bulb sale, a spring bulb sale for the last two years, a lily show (where hundreds of lilies are brought in by members for show and competition), and a garden tour that usually is concurrent with the show. These are not always in the Twin Cities. We have had the show and tour in Rochester, Mora, St. Cloud and probably some other places.

The people are great. They warm up to you right away. Minnesota has a reputation for breeding lily hybridizers. And of course, they all belong to the Society. If you'd like to D-mail me your email address, I could attach the last newsletter and email it to you. The Twin Cities would be a good weekend trip. Lotsa things to do, even if you want to just shop. And my gardens/yard/lilies ain't to shabby either. Don't forget, 9 miles east of me is the Arboretum.

NSLS does have its own web site http://www.northstarlilysociety.com/ . Plastered on the home page right now is the link to the fairly complete list of bulbs that will be for sale on Oct 14. Oh yeah, if you read the Newsletter, it will say the sale is the 7th. It has been changed to the 14th. (the web site reflects that change.) From the site you can access a list of Minnesota hybrids and lots of good stuff.

Lefty-
You gave me so much great info. I will join this one, hoping that I can make it to some things here and there. It's not that far, in the big picture. I just wish they did mail orders on the sales....but that's okay. It still sounds great. The bulb selection sounds very nice. Some that have my curiosity peaked, of course. I'll mail in my dues. It's really a deal. Thanks for your info. I bet your garden isn't too "shabby". Lily addicts have the best gardens, don't you agree??
Now to wait for the PNWLS list! Really I AM patient......

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I was cruising over the PNWLS homepage and saw the lovely flowering beauty called "Shenandoah". Can this be purchased anywhere. Oh, I just love it.
Scroll down a bit and you will see it!

Wow.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

North Star did ship to me.....twice now! I just got ahold of an officer and begged and she did the shopping for me. I think for the most part if you got in touch with the bulb sales chair they will work with you.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Hey llilyfan, thanks for that info. It's too great a deal to pass up. Even if I get in on the Spring one and miss this one;I will join. We'll see how that PNWLS bulb list looks. It's apparently taken the "pony express " route. I AM patient...I AM patient.

Lindenhurst, NY

This is like a lily feeding frenzy:-) You guys crack me up.

I'm a little unsure of the northstar lily society. Are you joining to get 10% off? I know the dues sound really low, but 10% off bulb prices doesn't seem like a significant discount. The PNWLS bulb sale prices are like 3.50 vs. 5.50.
Of course I'm new to lilys and just trying to follow what's going on here so if someone could explain it to me I would be so happy,
Maureen

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Maureen-This society appeals to me, because it is close in proximity, to where I live. Perhaps giving me a chance to be involved. The sale list is nice, but my main goal is to have a shot at attending a meeting here or there. The dues are 2 years for $10, so it sounds like a pretty good "gamble", for what I'd like to get out of it. It's a potential for more personal "connectedness" to a group.
Perhaps a trip to the PNW is less likely in frequency, for me, as far as attending meetings and picnics and such. Though I do have great passion for that part of the country (OR & WA)and hope to attend something at some point.
Still waiting for that ctalog. Monday will be the day, I can feel it :0)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I am so excited! The PNWLS lily bulb sale booklet arrived. Thanks go to Pard for sharing her sneak peak. This list is wonderful! Choices....choices....choices. Rats! I can feel my checkbook dwindling. Maureen, just you wait!

Lindenhurst, NY

HI Mag, now I understand the society bit. I didn't realize you lived nearby. I would love to be close to a lily society. Now...tell us what your getting from the bulb sale. I'm expecting my book to be here tomorrow since they shipped to me the day after they sent yours. I can't wait. Are there any Mcrae lilys to choose from?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Maureen, the selection is wonderful & the prices really great in so many cases. There are a bunch of Mc Rae selections., one I chose was a melon tetra trumpet. I also went for a sneak preview lily from C-P aka Lily Garden called Act Two. It's interesting to read the descriptions. Some of them I haven't been able to reference. Now I'm wanting to move to Oregon (the state), as if there wasn't enough reason before. You MUST tell me what you think. They also sent a Spring Bulletin and OH! So informative. You will love this. I am now just relaxing a diving into the many selections.....that and I just borrowed McRae's book from my local library. Very good book.
