That is likely what you saw. They are still very popular here in Eastern Ky. You see those little huts in nearly everyone's yards.
Which breed of chicken is the most beautiful?
Please pardon me while I deviate from the topic for just a minute...
Hey CajuninKy! I couldn't believe it when I saw that you're from Inez! I was born in Paintsville and all my family is from Van Lear, both in Johnson County! Do you ever get over that way? When I was growing up we went to several square dances held in Paintsville and Inez. They would close off the streets at sundown and everyone would come from all over the county to dance in the streets until late at night. I have lots of wonderful memories from back then. Well, enough reminiscing. I'll stop here and get back to our topic... CajuninKy, it's always good to meet or hear from someone from back home! Soak up some of that mountain air for me! I miss "My Old Kentucky Home"!
Now, back to the gamecocks... CajuninKy, do you know what (breeds) of gamecocks folks keep down there? I didn't mention this in my prior post, but when I was 9 (around 1966), I and saw my Papaw's neighbor, Dean, and another guy, put each of their gamecocks into a pen together. The fight was incredibly fierce, but it didn't last long. They were just "testing" the birds (what ever that means) and after a little bit, Dean jumped in and got his gamecock out before it could get really hurt. ...It was so sad, and scary for me. Forty years later, I still remember that day vividly.
