Cunninghamia lanceolata "Glauca"

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

Does anyone have experience growing this? I was reading the Colorado Blue Spruce thread and seen so many people were having problems. Wouldn't this be a good alternative? My neighbor has the regular green version but I don't think I have ever seen the blue one (except photos).

I don't have it but know where most of the older specimens are around town. I've grown it from seed and the seedlings come up in colours from green to nice powdery blue. It does like its protected spot. There was one tree that grew above the height of the house. Where it had grown above showed more winter-burn and reddish branches than below the house level as the location was quite windy. The only downfall to this tree is it's occasional reddish branches.

It's a nice tree, but nowhere near as bright as many of the better Picea pungens cultivars. Also (as Growin's photo shows), the blue doesn't persist well, the old foliage turns green faster than on Picea pungens or other blue-foliage Pinaceae.

I still prefer Cunninghamia over Picea for its less formal shape, unusual foliage and luxuriant new growth.

I would become best mates with anyone who could hook a lad up in Colorado with some seed of this fine plant.
(Or provide trade material, or whathaveyou)
It is something I have wanted to grow here for ages.

An easy collection. Seedlings are a variety of colours. D-mail me.
