Listing zones and using latin names

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I have been noticing that many members do not list either a location or a zone. It is helpful for me when reading posts, to know what zone, and so have an idea if what someone else has would do well where I am, or if their query might also pertain to me or my area. Any ideas on how to encourage people to add their zones... and/or even modify their current member info. to include that info?

Also, I know many people are wanting latin names used when possible as plants are known differently throughout this garden... and I know many people like myself often don't know the name. Let's encourage that use gently, okay? Written words have no inflection and I just saw a post that commented about using latin names... words which were most likely intended as helpful but could also be interpreted as a handslap to the person who posted the known common name.

Hi Darius

I am with you on all points I do try to look up things and try to learn them. But this ole dog has a hard time remembering new tricks.
As far as the zone I guess I am bad about that myself, it's a new trick I guess I should learn.

Perhaps when registering, if the zip code was "required", then the zone would automatically be put in . . . of course, that would only apply to the US. That would obviously require some alternations to the software program.

How would you do that for other parts of the world, as there are members from outside the US?

I'm not good with remembering latin names either -- although I do try to write them down for the plants I have or want . . . it's hard to keep up with them all.

I love having the zones information redily available. As far as the latin names go. sorry guys will never work with me I have a hard time remembering to eat breakfast anymore. Its hard getting old. On second thought never say never right. I will make a sincere effort to do that.
And darius how true about the wrong inflection being "heard" on a posting. Where I work we comminicate almost alway by IM or e-mail very rarly by voice. You can not believe the number of problems our HR department has to clear up because the "tone" of what was read was not the same as the "tone" it was written in.
