ID please Tropical

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8b)

A good friend of mine found this in the Fort Lauderdale FL area. He said it was a rather large bulbous-looking plant, these were hanging off of the bloom stalks. He didn't get photos of the mother plant but did get me a couple of pix of the pups. The mother plant is now gone.

Some ID help would be much appreciated! Considering where it came from, in the famous line from Ralphie's father in A Christmas Story, "It could be ANYTHING!"

Hi Ya,...

You say that the bulbs were "Hanging Off"???? Don't know about that.

But the plant thingy looks like a Crinum lily. But, look at those leaves.....can you imagine bulbets hanging off those.....I can't.

Can we have a little more info?

Hap

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8b)

I know the plant thingy looks like a crinum but the bulbils were hanging off of where the blooms used to be.

Probably in the lily family

Definitely tropical

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

OK, now I'm getting the pix.. The (?) things were hanging on the flower stalk? That sounds right. They were not hanging on the leave!!!!

Whew, you scared me for a minute.... Yes, I really think it the lily that I mentioned.

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8b)

Crinum???? No way. Those I know! They don't do that, at least to my knowledge...........

here's another photo, this one he has had potted up for a month or so.

BTW I checked with my crinum supplier, definitely not that, he suggested an Aussie plant called Calostemma but I can't find foliage photos anywhere. Several plants in the onion family do the bulbil thing but the foliage is wrong for those.

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8b)

Wow, look what a plant can do!

To answer the bulb question, I started with Tropicals, then after a shot in the dark from a friend I posted a link on the Aussie forum. I'll put a link in bulbland, too....

I'm a bulb freak and I've never seen this, but there are lots and lots of things out there I don't know about....more every day...........

Welcome to the crowd....P

If this shows up twice I apologies. I sent it once and nothing happened. Anyway, the bulb looks like it is from an Agave plant. They frequently produce bulblettes at the top of their flower spike instead of seeds, (not sure why). Also the pictures look like some type of Agave but not sure which one.

I think we're on the right track, I posted a link on the Aussie forum because of a suggestion a friend gave me, brical1 in Australia gave me more info which sent me to palmbob.

I sent a pic of what we all think the plant is (Furcraea foetida) to my friend, if he IDs the mama I'll post the info and mark it solved!

Thanks for your help, everyone! I think we got it, or as close as we can until the pups grow up.

I guess since I didnt post this in the ID forum I can't mark it "solved", but I think it is.

Looks like one of the billbergias to me...

I looked them up ,and it said "propagation: by offsets after flowering".

Not so fast gals - I just went out and took this pic of my crinum! Now what do you think??

Thank you so much for all the ID suggestions! You guys are awesome!

The first photo on this post is actually a bulbil rather than a seed. I also got more info from my friend as far as how it was fastened to the plant

Quoting:
I found a long, pendant, woody trailing stem with the little boogers hanging on willy-nilly along the sinuous stem.

we have IDed it as being some type of Furcraea, possiblyFurcraea foetida http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62866/index.html

Azalea: Those are some awesome looking crinum seeds! I would love to get a couple. What variety is that?

seedpicker_TX: I've got a couple of billbergias, they are a special favorite bromeliad to me. The offsets on mine are formed at the base of the plant.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

I don't know it's name, it is all white. I had it several years before it bloomed. I will share one when they get ripe if you like. D mail me Plantnutga. I have decided after looking again at the first pic, that your bulbil is not a crinum- yours sems to have some sort of layers over it, mine are smooth. I never saw these before, because I always deadheaded the spent blooms. I wonder how big they will get!!! I will wait til they start to shrivel or turn brown before I pick them.

Fucrea bulbil, they can make 100's of them on 12 ft or taller bloom spikes.the spike falls over and away they fly, where they land they sprout and grow.

I'm intrigued with this plant... So does it die after it blooms and produces the bulbs? I want one, wonder if I could winter it over somehow....

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

You can buy them on eBay (I bought a variegated one and two green nondescript ones there last year). They get huge if you are in a tropical zone (they are not winter hardy). Here is a variegated form in bloom in Thailand. It's also called false agave for obvious reasons.

I was reading the comments on it in PF and that's how I gathered it dies after producing bulbs. Very cool pic of it in Thailand. I wouldn't expect one to look that good here "on the prairie" but, I'd like to try one. I'll surf around and check out ebay.. thx

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is a picture of my little variegated one this year. It was quite small last year. It is in a six inch clay pot for reference.

I'm not sure if furcraea dies after blooming like agaves do.

wow! your baby is beautiful! I think they do die after blooming but my goodness they put out some babies!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So hc, where you getting these pics? Did you go to Thailand? I like the look of yours in the 6 in pot... very pretty.

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes, we were in Thailand for two weeks in July. It is a great place for tropical gardens. Two great places to visit are Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Pattaya and Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Chiang Mai.

Here are some more furcraeas at the hotel we stayed at in Pattaya overlooking the ocean.

This is one interesting plant.

I'm gonna go hunting for one of those bulbils.

Robert.

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is a picture of my variegated one and the more common green form (2 in this pot). You can see that the common form grows a lot quicker which makes sense (both were bought last year and were about the same size when I received them).
