I think it is called an asp. I saw a picture of one earlier today when I was looking for mine. It looks like a lost toupe. See if you can find asp in google.

Yes, it is southern flannel or puss moth. It was my 9-yo "surrogate" daughter from next door who caught it, so I rushed over to make sure she knew not to touch it. She was thinking of letting it go (hope she does). She and I are fellow nature-lovers - she's cute as a bug, but likes to trap things! Thanks for the ID, as always.
