I bought a nice mature plant in the spring, the leaves were very "Burgundy" as the name implies. The lady I bought it from had several in full sun. I planted mine in full sun - I also bought a tray of "Babies" in 4" pots, they were also Burgundy. I put the babies in the shade, in just a couple of weeks, they ALL turned green, even the big one!!!! Why??? In the past couple of weeks, the big plant started putting up Burgundy leaves again. What gives!
Help with Sparkling Burgundy Pineapple Lily
Never mind! I just called the lady that I got them from - she said that she has raised these beauties for 4 years, and hers also turned green for the first time this year. She said she thinks it is just the extreme heat that we have had here in GA this year. now that we are having cooler weather, the burgundy color is returning. Hooray!
Funny what the weather can do to the colors of plants, isn't it. Thanks for the update :-)
And shade - these don't like too much shade. I have the burgundy one - for about 4 years - and I find it comes up almost black, turns a deep purple and by the end of the summer it is green with some purple streaking. It does this every year.
You can propagate these by leaf cuttings. Take one of the long leaves, cut it into 2" long pieces and insert the 'downward' cut ends into small pots. It took me a long time - 6 months? - to get babies. I saw the fellow from Plant Delights on a tv show saying this was the best way to propagate and get the 'true' color. They had tried seeds and even tried cloning and not gotten good results. He said they 'discovered' the leaf cuttings and it worked so I thought I'd give it a try.
see the tiny little bud at the base of the leaf on the left?
These babies are more green because they've been under shop lights in the laundry room - no real sun.
Yes, the lady I bought it from told me about this - so I tried it - out of about 20 2" peices, I did get 2 babies!! Looking a lot like yours. I was thrilled with this and will try more. The one flower that I got, I find that there are seedpods forming - I will see what comes of those. A fun project anyway.
Thanks for the pic.
