I thought I was done planting for the year, but fell off the wagon and came home with this Magnolia yesterday. Anyone have experience growing this? I can't give it a highly protected site, but could plant it on north side of wooded ridge, where it will be in partial shade and out of hot south wind. Can these take a fair amount of shade and still flower heavily?
Magnolia 'Butterflies'
I think so. They have huge leaves from their M. acuminata bloodline. Usually the large-leaved magnolias handle shade pretty well. Have not seen "Butterflies" in a shady sight, however, so take the encouragement with a grain of salt. I have actually seen a full-sun, roadside, island bed planting of "Butterflies" at a McDonalds near here. The landscaper was either brilliant or lucky, because the tree is growing great. No leaf scorch whatsoever.
"Butterflies" is a beautiful cultivar. Lovely yellow flowers. Deer seem to like it too.
Scott
I guess the decision I have to make is between protection from wind vs. sun. I'll probably opt to keep it in more sun, which is out away from the larger trees to the north. One way or the other, its going in the ground today. Thanks for the help, Scott.
Around here Magnolia's like to grow at the edges of pine forest. I don't think a fair amount of shade is a bad thing.
