I harvested some eucryphia seeds and need to know how to get the seed out of the pods. It appears there is a round pod that opens and then smaller pods are inside. What is the seed, the pod or inside the smaller pods? I have them drying, I believe they are ripe as the outer pod is opening. I want to grow these and need some help here, anyone know about harvesting the seeds on them??
Rebecca
Eucryphia need help with seeds
One of my books shows a pic of the pod splitting like an orange and seeds within the division. It says to dry the pods and they will split into sections and carefully remove the seed from the sections. Says there is few seed. It kinda looks to be a capsule with sections like a Paulownia pod.
Okay so does the seed look like a little pod or does the small pod open to expose seed? If so the seed must be tiny.
Rebecca
The pod sorta looks like a short Okra or longer poppy pod. That splits up into segments like what you find in an orange. I can just see a seed inside one of the segments. This is in "The Botanical Garden", Vol 1, Trees and Shrubs, p213 (Index says 215 but it's an error). To answer your question, the small segment of the pod has the seed inside and looks like it might be the size of an orange seed or watermelon seed.
Well that was upsetting. First, even though I got lots of seed pods, it doesn't appear I have any seed. Second, did you try and read that thing? I feel retarded now. What a fantastic link, I am going to go back and try and read some more..lol.
Thanks so much for the help, probably saved me from planting chaff, and don't think I have not done that in the past.
Rebecca
LOL! I didn't look at it - just the pretty pic. Retarded not - you spelled Eucryphia right. I was only after the pic of the seed and the pod instead of me describing it - didn't even occur to me to read it other than the latin name. How old is your Eucryphia? The book said "few seed".
I got mine in a gallon pot 1 year ago and repotted it in a 5 gallon, its about 4 feet now, just put it out in the garden. Its such a beautiul tree, I love the foliage and the shape. I did not get flowers this year but hoping for next. I stole the pods from another tree, may have to go and get more as it does not look like I have many seeds. But I want a lot of these trees.
I did go back and try to read that thing some more, wow, made me go and get a glass of wine, the thing stressed me, I tell you!
Rebecca
Have you thought of doing cuttings? I tried and had a few take.
I may try that, hate to cut up my tree, but the one I got the seeds from was huge and she probably wouldn't mind me taking a bunch of cuttings. I have heard they are difficult to get to root, once I hear they are difficult, I usually try another way.
Thanks for the help, I have the pods drying, may get enough seed once they open.
Rebecca
Boy, Rebecca, I'd hate for you to get too stressed (or boozed up) over them!
If you do get any surplus seeds, I will hop on my carpet and be over to trade with you for some!
(Seriously, if you do- I'd love to trade something for them, even two of 'em. I'll offer more than seeds; saplings, etc.)
Hey James,
Well sometimes when you leave a thing alone, it works better. I quit poking and picking at them, put them in a cup to dry in the sun and in the bottom of the cup I am starting to get a fair amount of seeds. I will definately have some for you, I have 30-40 so far and most of the pods are not yet open.
Thanks to Growin, I know what they look like!!
Rebecca
Hey what you got to trade, I am always looking for cool stuff...
