How long to stake a tree?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

A 6" caliper weeping Higan was planted June 23 this year. Am I done with stakes once the leaves fall or should I wait until after spring storms next year ? I hate looking at em. But if they are a necessary evil so be it. While I am on the subject, this tree was not my pick for form. It has one 2" badly crossed and rubbing branch that has to come out. Can I do this next spring after flowering or I should I wait until spring 2008? Otherwise, for a tree this size and moved late, it handled the move pretty good and looks decent.

Stakes should be removed at the earliest possible time. Once the leaves have fallen and the tree is less prone to be blown over, an once it has rooted itself in, it should be good.

Pruning should be done while the tree is dormant. I use those few nice days of late February as my excuse to get out there and do the dirty deed.

Thank you Decumbent. I hate those stakes. Even worse I dislike the badly placed branch. I'm never sure what to do when and appreciate the info. Next month for the stakes and next February with the pruners it is.

I've got a situation with a bald cypress that I planted in the church yard next door. It's too skinny. If I don't use a stake it flops over. I'm going to try the two stake method and tie it loosely. If it don't start holding itself up soon I'm going to replace it with a younger one.

Said the same thing about hubby. Does that work for trees too?

If you have deer, you might want to leave the stakes in place and just untie them. The rats-with-antlers will rub your young tree to death if at all possible, and stakes can discourage that. Of course, I'm talking about tall stakes near the trunk, not low outrigger stakes. Maybe your tree is big enough already to be resistant, but I've seen major damage on trees nearly that size. Idea: stake hubby out there on a dog chain to chase the deer! Can he bark?
