The e coli outbreak found on fresh bagged spinach

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

We home gardeners are lucky in the spinach and lettuce problem. Most of us know what we put in our soil and had already eaten some and survived by the time the crisis arrived. We have been enjoying our greens in spite of the spinach crisis, but surely do miss it when we go out for dinner. Sag paneer is one of our favorite Indian dishes ( or Lamb Sagawala). I did finally get some in Denver on this past Sunday, but except for my home grown spinach, I have missed the fresh pre-washed spinach. Hopefully they will soon learn how to keep the cow manure out of the irrigation water. It may not be easy but lots of people want the spinach and lots want to sell it but nobody wants e coli.

Hopefully these e coli incidents will bring attention to the environmental hazards and inhumane conditions of the confinement animal feed operations (CAFO), ie, feed lots, and help change the conditions for the livestock. We need to encourage meat, dairy and egg consumers to buy from pastured, not CAFO animals.

Agreed.

Whole Foods is offering spinach in their salad bar again. I'm eating some right now. I trust Whole Foods.

Seems like it been traced back to a cattle lot about a mile away from some spinach fields.

Food Safety Guidelines for the Lettuce and Leafy Greens Supply Chain. www.fresh-cuts.org/files/LettuceGuidanceDocument.pdf Some of you grow spinach. Note that with 83 cultivars listed in Plantfiles, There is only one photo in all of them.

Bad commentary on our contributions to our Planfiles. I haven't looked to see if New Zealand spinach is there but next year I plan to grow some and certainly will post photos. Maybe others as well. I love spinach.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Concerning PlantFiles, I never thought to contribute to the spinach ones. I do have spinach growing, but it kind of looks poorly. It does taste good though. Perhaps I could find a decent looking plant to photograph. I

I do not grow any vegetables so I miss not being able to get green leaves, espeacially spinach for salads.. I think frozen spinach is ok for a side dish , at least I hope so.

Maria, I buy frozen Cascadian brand organic spinach. Best tasting spinach I've ever had besides home-grown. A lot of stores carry it.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

You might consider growing your own spinach if you have a little space. It is easy as long as you plant in cool weather. It can take some freezing even and the seeds are large so they are easy to plant -- unlike those teeny weeny carrot seeds. Home grown spinach is fabulous. Plant them only an inch or so apart then thin and eat the baby thinnings. Very pleasant.

Thanks, Darius, just could eat spinach every day, my mother cooked it often when it was available, she would but a poached egg on top, very European, I just loved it and sometimes do it just like hers.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmmm...sounds like a quick and easy "spinach souffle", Maria! Well, sorta! Sounds good to me!

My spinach has finally declared but still too small to harvest. Will take pics when they are picture-sized!

Shoe.

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

My spring spinach reseeded itself and there is a bit of it. My spring lettuce has gone wild reseeding itself in the adjacent potato patch.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

try it Shoe, see how you like it. Wish I had spinach growing!!!! BTW Loved reading thread of your visit plus camping, how neat can it get? Not much better.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep, I'm sure I'll try it, Maria. We have farm fresh eggs here daily so that would be one great spinach/egg dish, eh!? Yummy!

And yes, that was a nice trip...I sure saw some great people, quite a bit of the countryside (drove many miles!), and didn't even have a breakdown (the van has over 209,000 miles on it!). Yay! Maybe next time I head north!

:>)
