I'm considering buying a forest pansey but have never seen one (only pictures). I'm in zone 6 and the location would be sunny. Does anyone have one of these trees? I'd appreciate any information. Thank you.
red bud forest pansey
I know of one in a local park growing very nicely in full sun, zone six.

Or, find a Redbud (anywhere) and look for seedlings. These trees produce new trees by the boatfulls. Then it's free.

Daiseycat, Plant the tree at the edge of your property, or as an understory planting. The trees are very beautiful in bloom but for most of the year they are plain Janes. Robb
Everybody - I really appreciate all of your input. Robb, the plain jane issue was exactly what I was concerned about. That and multiple seedlings turn me off. It's settled, I'm going for a cherry tree. Any favorites? Thanks again.
Daiseycat, I wonder if some here know you're talking about Forest Pansy, which is a beautiful tree even when not in bloom, and not regular redbud?
Not that I consider my regular redbuds to be plain Janes when they're not blooming. I think they're a beautiful tree. But the Forest Pansy with its burgundy leaves is just gorgeous.
Here's a photo of a nice sized one.

I'm with you, hart; love the redbuds in general, but love 'Forest Pansy' in particular.
Thank you hart. What great pictures and information. Your garden is lovely. So clean and organized - name tags and all. Love the way you've continued the purple in your border plants. I'm picturing my corner spot with a Forest Pansey surrounded with complimentry border plants. Hmmm. Thanks again.
Thanks, but those pictures aren't from my garden, they're from Google. The last two are from a botanical garden and the first one is from a nursery.
Well, nuts! And here I was, preparing to sneak over there to The Valley with a shovel some night!

I wish had the Missouri Botanical Garden in my yard. LOL
You're welcome to come over with a shovel if you want some black walnuts, black cherry or red cedar trees, Guy. We have plenty of those. Oh, and sassafras. And box elders aka "mangy maples."
daiseycat, Forest Pansy could be considered a "plain jane" but you can't beat the flowers and gorgeous foliage in the spring. We have one that was planted about 10 years ago and pruned up to form a canopy over one part of our driveway. Because of its form you don't even notice the rather drab green foliage when the heat kicks in by the middle of July. We liked it so much we planted another one 2 years ago on the other side of the driveway. Here's a photo of the younger tree one year after planting.
Wow "Prunned up" with underplanting looks great. The corner I'm working on is a sunny, WINDY, steep hillside. The underplanting would help in my struggle against errosion also. Thank you.
