Ok, I'm depressed now! Here I thought I was being so smart by saving my amaryllis seed... I made sure not one seed escaped from the pods (LOL) and I now have a mother-load of amaryllis seeds. However, they were collected back in March 2006 and now I'm reading in this forum that they need to be planted right away. Has anyone germinated amaryllis seed that has been saved for several months or should I just throw these away and try again next year??

I've germinated them that were a year old with good success rates.

Amaryllis seeds sprout quickly if you give them a bit of heat from underneath. Try a tray on top of your fridge.

What about an old waterbed heater under the seed tray... is that safe?

That should be fine. I used to put a tray directly on top of a furnace! The germination rate was nearly 100 % and they came up so fast! Just mae sure to bag them to keep in the moisture and check daily. As soon as they're up remove from the heat, and more will continue to germinate.
