Henka Asagao
Love this one.
Jackie
Jackie, I too am in love with this one, it's just soo pretty, seems like hundreds of blooms a day are open, and they seem to stay open all day long, some into the next day. so pretty.
Breezy - That bloom and leaf shape is catalogued in the MG Files at Kyushu, but I don't know the exact strain # offhand...
TTY,...
Ron
TOO COOL RON, if you come across it later please post it here or the link, I do think this one is stunning!
Hi Laurrie,
Nice Bloom!
I would LOVE some of your seeds if you have enough to share. I'd like to cross this one back to some of my others that I have gotten that yours came from.
Cat got her original seeds from me that came from my ONE SINGLE SEED that I got as a 'stray' that I refer to as Henka Blue-Type. This has thrown so many different variants with different colors and patterns. Colors from Blues to Grays to Plums to Raspberry colors. A few have been streaked and striped [which is one of Ron's favorites from these]
I should start a thread and post all of the different blooms that I've gotten as a result of this ONE SINGLE SEED and let others add to it that have gotten the same, or even different blooms than I.
What these seeds continue to produce is ENDLESS!
Edited to say that MANY of these variations have grown back 'TRUE'. A couple or so have not grown back true - yet, they were 'Awesome'.
I still have a few of my original seeds from the first year I grew these and will probably plant them next year.
The single vine that I grew gave me hundreds of seeds, and I sent them to many people EVERYWHERE labeled as 'Henka Asagao Blue'. Didn't know any better :-(....so they were sent all over the US and other countries. It is fun to see different blooms that have come from them.
Here is one from this week that I started very late, so I hope I get seeds from this one before our first frost.
A Raspberry and Plum combo color. Very interesting.

I can't find my photos at the moment from this year that had the same leaves as your bloom is showing. However, all of these vines don't have this leaf. Others are the normal solid green tri-lobed. wonder why?
Emma
Lovely blooms Emma. We've missed your posts.
Jackie
I love the rasberrry/plum combos!
Thanks Jackie...
Between taking care of my 3-year old granddaughter and monster computer problems AND picking MG seeds, I haven't even had the chance to read much yet. Hope to get caught up when my *new* computer is set up this weekend and get everything transferred over AGAIN!
Ronnie ---
LOVE your blooms.
My hand is waving for seeds if you have enough.
Like I need more seeds *ha*
I miss everyone. . .
Emma
baolvera,
Thanks, they really are nice blooms...
Emma
Sure Emma, hoping the heavy frost hols off for a bit more so they can fully mature.
OhioBreezy, that is a great looking plant - leaf and bloom!
The leaf shape is called dragonfly (dg), more specifically the spade type of dragonfly. It is caused by the dragonfly (dg) gene which lengthens the center or middle lobe of the leaf. Often it will cause the side lobes to "split" into two lobes on each side....looking like dragonfly wings and body to the Japanese. The Japanese call it a spade leaf when the dragonfly leaf has only one side lobe on each side. The dg gene is present in most of the large flowered JMG's because it increases flower size a bit also. We usually see it combined with the retracted (re) gene which influences the leaf by shortening the middle lobe and giving the leaf a more rounded, worn by water shape by reducing the points. The Japanese call a retracted only leaf a "sandy beach leaf". The retracted gene greatly increases the flower size. When dg is combined with re we get the cicada leaf of the true large flowered JMG's.
Emma, that is the beginning of a great story about your single seed and the Henka Blue-type! I am very fond of the Raspberry/Plum/Gray look to its children. Maybe we can talk a trade some day!
Arlan
Hi Arlan,
Sure - I'm up to a trade. But give me a few weeks until I get my computer mess straightened out.
I have some really nice MG's from this year.
Here is the Gray from the Henka Blue-Type. Named it 'Morning Mist'. It has grown back TRUE for three years now.

Laurrie, didn't mean to hog your thread *lol*
Emma
LOL you can hog this thread all you want!! I just enjoy sharing photos and enjoy seeing your photos too Emma. I should have tons of these seeds, give me a shout thru dmaill so I don't forget.
Thanks Joseph, besides my children, the next bes thing to photograph are the blooms!!
Beautiful pictures! I`m short of words. I love the color and the white margin. What more can I say? I want seeds. :) If you see any of mine you like and I have seeds to spare then Dmail ok?
I have some seeds, there are still some on the vines, but need to go check them to see how they are holding up, we've gotten huge amounts of rain this fall, so don't want to say for certain until I check to be sure they are ripe and not rotten out there ;)
Gardener, if OhioBrezzy doesn't have any I have a few extra.
Me too, Ronnie...
I'd love seeds of yours-
Very nice.
Karen,
I can send you some of mine as well. I have LOTS of different types of the Henka.
Also, I haven't forgotten you.
I can add some of these seed with the others to you.
Emma
OK Emma will do!!
I`m glad I ran back over here for a second. That sounds great! Dmail when you are ready and I`ll send my mailing addy. I have a selection I have gathered I could trade but they are all open pollinated. I have a few hand pollinated but not many to trade since I was experimenting and learning how to do the procedure right. I did the hand pollinating to get true seeds to grow out next year and then do more hand pollinating and selection so I can hopefully have some good seeds to use for trade and gifts to. I sent some to my Dad already as a gift. I`m waiting on pods on some of them and I really need to check and make sure all the rain we have been having isn`t getting to them.
I have work to do so gotta run. :)
