This fellow was busy digging a hole; occasionally flying around. Orange legs and mid section. Tail end black.
CLOSED: Wasp or hornet???
OK, think I may have found it. Could it be a GOLDEN DIGGER WASP? It was digging a hole in hard ground by the machine shed.
About an inch+ long.
Think it's a female Great Golden Digger Wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus) settling in for the winter. Rather getting ready to bury eggs and food for them.
