Another lovely Japanese M.G. wintersown from seed.

I like the inner glow effect.

Thanks so much, Sherry & Joseph!

I have those also. They look a lot like the President Tyler, only the blooms are much prettier and bigger. Emma sent me a bunch of different kinds and I as usual did not label them.

Hoshi asagao= star morning glory

Thanks so much for the translation! Yes, I can see how 'Hoshi Asagao' got its name.

I was taking pictures of mine when my puppy got in the picture. Pups and flowers do not make good companions. Luckily, I got him away from it. This is the JMG that I have. I don't think the leaf is part of it, though. I have quite a few growing in the same area.

The Photo I posted above is a selection from my best 'vintage' Star Of Yelta stock...

Here are pictures of the "Star of Yelta" from DG Plant Files. Please compare and tell me what you think. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/51638

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

The leaves of the Star of Yelta are heart shaped and the leaves of the Japanese Morning glory are usually variegated and three lobed, aren't they?

I shared on my experience of the blue-purple Ipomoea purpureas in this thread here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/641273/

My thoughts are that the Hoshi asagao is not an 'ultra-specific' name but most likely a very general sort of term that some Japanese may be useing to refer to the blue Ipomoea purpurea that shows the commonly seen star pattern...

Ron

P.S. - some thoughts on exactly "What is a Japanese MG" anyway(??)
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/581971/
P.P.S. - The leaves on Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea can be either heart or trilobed...the sepals and the seedpod pedicel are how the species is determined...

Shirley, love the color and great photo!

Windy, just too cute! I have to keep my Jack Russell from accompanying me when I'm trying for butterfly shots as he shoos them away. He has a thing about, uhhh, marking my one living Echinacea plant!! (grrrr) A whole field of grass and he marks THAT plant...LOL.

Thanks for sharing Shirley and all, I really love looking at the flowers.

Edited for typo!

I bet more gardeners have pets than any other hobbyists. I guess we like the challenge of trying to grow things against all odds. LOL
Theo is trying his best to water my viburnum into oblivion.
Another shot of my flower just to keep it on topic. LOL

Thanks for the wonderful information, Ron. I will print it out and re-read it. I have a lot to learn about M.G.'s.

Thanks Hineni & Windy. Yes, dogs will be dogs.
