CLOSED: Tiny gold/orange and black butterfly

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

do you know this very tiny butterfly? It looks yellow in the photo, but actually more of an iridescent gold with black. Very tiny - that is a chickweed flower it's on. this is the only pic I could get- he moved around so fast and so much . . .

thanks!

I just went through my Florida Butterfly Gardening book and nothing looked like it. And then I went through Florida's Fabulous Butterflies and still nothing. Anyone??? Karen

With a quick glance .. she looks like she may be kin to some of the hummingbird moths. And quite possibly, one 'visiting' .. from a bit further, way down south.

I'm jes speculatin', of course! ..

They fly really fast, in fact, I thought it was a small bee at first, until I saw it land. Small but the color in real life is lovely!

looks like one of the melonworm moths to me

I agree with DonnaB. this looks like a moth to me as well. I pegged it as a Pyralidae, which made my subsequent look at my moth information easier.

I checked my moth information (I have a copy of a moth website on my computer for faster reference that the website guy gave me, because I have dial-up - otherwise I'd give you a link.) and this is the closest to yours that I found...

Red-waisted Florella Moth -- Syngamia florella (Hodges #5184).

If you put that species name in google (I'd use the images option), it should direct you to some pictures of the species that you can compare to your moth.

The only small difference that I can see is that the two pictures I have of the moth, they has a couple of "striped" type areas on their abdomen. The wing pattern and color look spot on, however.

Hi Night Bloom - THANK YOU - I had started looking at every one of the melonworm moths and hadn't found it!

Excellent - thank you both!
