Chinese Yellow MG

Racine, WI

I was looking at the thread about maroon mg leaves and saw that Ron mentioned the Chinese Yellow. I purchased some seeds online and currently have one growing in my backyard..it has not bloomed. I was wondering if anybody ever got it to bloom? With fall fastly approaching, I was wondering what to do with it. I would like to see it bloom, but it will definately not survive the WI winter. I was thinking of taking a cutting and bringing it inside. Any extra info would be appreciated!

tbonewap - I've shared seeds of the Chinese Yellow with 'quite a few' people for the past several years and so far I have not heard of a single bloom produced yet in this country...

The Chinese Yellow vines may require several years to mature and develop a large enough tuber before they will bloom...this is sometimes the case with perennial MG's...

The tuberous roots will not survive the outdoor Winter temperatues in your zone,so you will need to carefully dig up the root and overwinter it indoors...keep the root in a damp sawdust or other low mold type of medium and then replant it in the Spring...A large tub on roller wheels would make it easier to bring the entire container into a heated garage type of environment if you have something like that type of situation to work with...

Rooting a piece of the vine would also be supplemental insurance to continued overwinter propagation...

Best of Luck(!)...

Thanks Ron. Sounds like a bit of a challenge! I've already taken a clipping. I'll wait until the first frost and then dig the tuber up. I was reading the thread on this plant from 2005 and it said they flower during late winter in China. I guess the hard part would be creating a similar environment.
