What I need in my database.....a certain word!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi everybody!

I need a certain vocabulary word for the top header in a column in my database, but i am not sure what the word is.

What is a word for plants that can be sown in the fall and live through the winter to bloom the following year?

Here is part of a post from Trudi
"I would suggest that you can now still start seeds of plants common to your local prairies and meadow--rudbeckias, helianthus, coreopsis, malvas and heavy-seeded grasses come to mind as they mature their seeds in summer and can sprout in late summer into autumn."

Are these guys biennials? Or is there another word? I want to have a column and put a Y in with all the ones that can be sown now. ("now" meaning late Aug early Sept)

Would pansies fal into that category?

Perennials or Self seeding Plants :o)
Edited to say
If I am not badly mistaken pansies are annual, at least they are here in zone 5

How about fall sowing, or just fall if you want it short and sweet.

Connie,

You don't know what you're missing if you don't sow pansies the first of August! They bloom nearly all winter (Indianapolis, is in zone 5, too). When the bitter cold comes, they quit blooming, but the flowers that are already on the plants bend to the ground, maybe get covered with snow and ice, but as soon as the tempweatures get above 30 again, they raise their heads up. In March, before the garden centers even get their little plugs instock, I've got big plants with 7-8 flowers on each one.

Fall is a good header, Zen, I was thinking there was a fancy gardener's word for these. Maybe not. LOL!

Thanks,
Suzy

Suzy, There probably is a fancy name, but I don't know what it is. Maybe if you read wintersowing.org you would find it.

I can plant pansies now???? (I'm in 7b) I thought you had to wait until spring. (Okay, so flowers are new to me)

Yippee (runs out after work to plant pansies)

Suzy, thanks for that info on the pansies, I will mark that in my database and plant some next year. I was gone almost the whole month of August and missed out on a lot it seems :)
