It's Only An Oak, But.....

....I still wonder what this orange goo is that is covering this rapidly declining Red Oak. Last winter it would drip out and form orange icicles. All branches, even smaller ones way up, seem to have it. Is it indicative of anything in particular?

They're fruiting bodies of some fungus. Maybe even the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, though I'm not sure if red/black oaks can serve as an alternate host..

I would cut that thing down and burn it before it spreads to another tree.

Red oaks are recorded as a rare alternate host, though not usually fatally infected. Whether that is what this tree has or not I don't know but probably not

Unfortunately, not my tree, it's my neighbors. Also unfortunately, it will fall towards me. I got them in touch with a friend/arborist after mentioning that this one needs to go, and they had him cut down two dead trees close to the house, NOT this one......*sigh*

I'll have him come in from my side and cut off the huge limb that would tip it my way. They have four kids who frequent that back yard area--you'd think they would be more interested in taking it down.

Where is Mr. Oak? Surely he has seen an orange-goo-covered Red Oak before! I should have shown this to you while you were here Guy, but I forgot. I wanted to make sure you got Viburnum-overload.

Sorry Kneevin, I've been pretty busy lately, and got a little frustrated with another thread. Whatever it is, you can keep it! Remind me to look at it when I'm there later this month.

I've seen that sort of stuff in my own woods - but only on dead trees - but it's possible they're dead as a result of infection with it - haven't paid attention that closely, as I don't monitor stuff that's growing wild as closely as those I've purposely planted.

Seems like I ran across a website somewhere in the last couple of weeks with a photo of a fungus that seemed to be identical, when I was looking for something else, but now I can't find it.
