This is a lovely ginger I received at an RU... it has grown extremely well and put up two pups, but has never bloomed (I'm thinking it might not get enough sun)...
Honestly, I'm perfectly happy with just the foliage, but I am curious as to ID ... to me it looks like Lemon Ginger (Monocostus uniflorus) http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/63935/index.html which needs more sun than this one currently gets (not that I'm moving it, I like it where it is).
Also, if he keeps reproducing at the current rate, I'm going to have do some separation (it's in a population control area) -- when the pups are so close to the mom, how does one separate without risking damage to mom?
TIA.
ID Needed: Spiral Ginger
It's definitely not Monocostus unifloris, just by looking at foliage. Gingers are always sending up new shoots from rhizomes and can be safely divided just by cutting rhizomes. How tall does it get? Is there any pubescence to the foliage? If it was Monocostus it would fry in the sun. You are usually safe with morning sun and afternoon shade/filtered light.

Mom is about 20" and doesn't appear to be completely done. No pubescence. It get's very little sun -- some filtered in the morning and about 30-45 minutes of late afternoon (4 pm) sun.
>>can be safely divided just by cutting rhizomes
Does that involve digging up mum and then replanting her, or cutting the rhizome with the shovel?
Has it ever had an inflorescense? It sure looks like (what is sold on the market as) Costus spicatus, which can grow to 5' tall and is a good, vigorous grower. How long have you had it? I can send you a picture of moncostus unifloris if you would like and show you the difference in the foliage. If it does turn out to be 'spicatus' you can grow that out in your yard in full sun to shade and it will bloom.

No inflourescense, but I've only had it since late July. The center plant (mom) was smaller than the two pups when I received her (only 3-4 leaves).
I think I'll wait for a bloom for further id, lol... I've looked at spiral ginger pictures until my eyes crossed and honestly, they all begin to look like the same darn plant... and none of them like mine.
If it never blooms? Well, it's still pretty. ;)
