I purchased a packet of Dwarf Blue Ensign from Value Seeds. I grew them out, and they are decidedly NOT Dwarf Blue Ensigns. These are teeny tiny morning glories, about 1/2 inch in diameter, or regular sized morning glory vines. I am not disappointed, I think they are adorable, but am clueless as to what they are.
What the heck is this?
It may be this one Ipomoea x leucantha
They favor the ipomoea triloba or "little bell" morning glory too.
Oh, where is Ron when you need him? :)
blpender - The flower looks like Ipomoea lacunosa to me because of the maroon-purple colored anthers...the other Ipomoea species mentioned should have non-pigmented anthers...although rare exceptions are always a possibility...
I'd be interested in a few seeds from your strain of Ipomoea lacunosa...please send me a Davesmail for a trade...

It`s pretty and I`ll bet it is just fine for the garden too.
So these plants can look alike from a distance but they have defining characteristics once you look close.

I sent the picture and a note to Value Seeds. This is their response, in part:
"I showed them to our horticulturist and she says she thinks that what you got may be a stray foil of Ipomoea Hirsuta {Mini Blue Sky}"
Any comments??

blpender - The flower you posted is Ipomoea lacunosa as entered in the PlantFiles here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/123099/
and is most likely a volunteer...
Ipomoea hederacea looks very different as entered in the PlantFiles here

Thanks for your question...

Ron
P.S. - If you can post a clear(!) closeup(!) of the seeds that remain from the package that you bought from Value Seeds,I will offer an opinion as to the identity of the species contained in the package...
Boy, you ARE good. Okay, I'll get on it. Thanks, Ron.
blpender - The seeds in the both of the photos above are all Convolvulus seeds and consistent with the dark brown coloration of the Convolvulus tricolor Blue Ensign...if you run your fingernail over the surface of the seeds you will be able to feel the small bumps that give the seedsurface a rough 'sandpaper' texture...
Hope that helps...

Ron

Okay, then the plant must have come from a single seed that accidentally found it's way into the package. I'll save you some seeds as they ripen, Ron. Thank you.
