Do you have a butterfly mating picture?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

snuzer that is a very pretty butterfly you have, or should I say mates.

TexasPP, it's amazing how many butterflies you have managed to capture in the making.

becky, it looks like you have a butterfly farm there!

I had a lot of butterflies this (last) year, but it was only the whites I saw mating. The common Small White seemed to make a very quick job of it, unless it was a lead up to the actual performance. I have one pic from 2005 where I saw a pair of whites join together amongst my species dahlias, then they danced off in unison swirling in harmony towards the sunset over the hedge, I took another once they set off but it was low amongst the greenery and at that time I only had a 32mb card enabling up to 15 pics, I was on the last and wiped the last one to try to get a better shot, so I will never know if it was any good, and of course I missed them as they shot off too quickly to get another pic.

Here's the pair, and although they don't look as big as some Large Whites (size can vary with time of year), the description in my book of their 'spiralling and vivacious' mating flight, they must be Large Whites (there is a smaller Greeen-veined White). The funny thing is it's the female initiating the union, she has 2 black spots on the upper forewing, the male waiting on the stem in readiness (how else does one put it?) has creamy undersides and no spots.

Last summer I got several shots of the Green-weined Whites, the first ones I took I got several shots in a short space of time, I kept 4 of the best all with a time within a minute. It seemed the male was inexperienced and had trouble hitting the mark, how else do you put it! I thought that the final encounter was a quick love you and leave m'aam. It was only now that I was looking at my pics and I had a shot which was taken 2 minutes later of a butterfly in flight by accident, but it looked strange, it appeared to have a very long body. It must have been the pair!

Here's the last of the first encounter pics, he kept revving up and scooting over the female.

This is the flight, looks like two bodies there!

wallaby1 - ROFL! Very funny how you wrote about your whites mating! LOL!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

There was a lot of these around, and they always seemed to be at it!

I had a Gatekeeper laying on the ground on it's side looking like it was dead, another came up near to it and I was thinking the poor thing was dead or dying, I could have taken a shot and left them to it but was curious and ended up scaring them off, I think I touched it to see if it moved, spoiled a good photo op. there!

Here's another series of the 'warm up' period, the sun was very bright from the wrong direction but no other way to take them, this male was either more experienced at snogging or a little more amorous!

You are cracking me up, Wallaby!

Actually the females emit a scent (as do the males). The males become VERY aggressive if they are intent upon mating! I've seen it a dozen times in my yard. That's nature!!

Love your succession of photos! Where's the Butterfly mating grants when we need one???? LOL

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Want another? I should be eligble for a lotta grants! I think I have shown there is sufficient activity to warrant it!

They will do it anywhere, no shame with anyone watching! But then I was always amongst them so they probably knew me well enough to not care.

The male is to the right of this one, just cut him off.

#5a I don't think Dave will give us one! I put an 'a' after the no's, it may have thought it was repeat post.

Don't ya just love the "burst mode" option on the digital cameras? Great succession of photos! Thanks for posting them! And welcome to this forum, Wallaby1! :-)

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Actually becky, I hadn't used the burst mode! I just snapped away, the pics take a short while to load to the memory card but they were at it for a while so I had plenty of chances! To use the burst mode I would have to go into the menu and find the darned thing!

Thanks for the welcome! I should visit more often, I spent all summer snapping butterflies and bugs.

Really? I'm impressed! I can't hold a camera steady for that long myself! Good job getting the photo scoop on their activity! LOL!

Come and visit and stay awhile anytime, Wallaby! And do continue to share your photos with us!

I think I have taken so many pics now with the digi it's become second nature to me. I took many on zoom when the butterflies were high up on the Buddleja, you get used to it.

I have another lot (same butterflies) in Purple Loosestrife I have growing in the water's edge, they loved that.

These look like fairies.

Do you have a photo of the Purple Loosestrife? I am trying to add a bog garden bed to my backyard and am looking for plants that would be good nectar or host plants for butterflies.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Well I just posted on your other thread, it is prohibited in FL but there may be a garden form that is acceptable, woth checking it out.

The last pics are that. I'll find a bigger one.

it grows to about 6' tall.

What beautiful flowers! Too bad it is considered invasive in Florida. :-(

Nice photo, gordo! (Pssst ... But they aren't Monarchs. They are Gulf Fritillaries!)

My, my, my...what a busy post this turned out to be today!!! :o)

Welcome Wallaby and Gordo!!!

Thanks for sharing your photographs Wallaby. For a while there I was thinking I was the only butterfly voyeur showing off photos...then again, Deb from Fort Worth had me laughing with her comment about the number of views far outweighing the number of postings :o)

Love that purple loosestrife - it's nice and tall...am sure butterflies can spot that from far away!!!

Nice Gulf Frits Gordo...those butterflies are quite prolific here. Males tend to ravage the females before they can eclose properly. Had several females with deformed wings and another with wings that were so badly crumpled up and dried she could not fly.

Hi TexasPP! I think the viewing numbers have gone up dramatically now!

You must carry your camera with you wherever you go, so many different ones! I have a lot of pics of different butterflies, but I don't know where the others did their business, these were all in my garden. They didn't mind me either!

Beautiful Loosestrife there Janet.... Great plant, wow!

Hi Gordo..........and nice to see you Cat!

Got to add my pic to the x-rated file. Two BSTs I raised, wouldn't get out of the cage to freedom before they began to coup. Guess they have known each other since they were wee babies though! hehe!

Fly that article was disturbing! If it didn't have the pics I wouldn't have believed it.
Views vs. replies 76 to 412 right now.....wow!

Let me dig up a few from this summer, you're right they belong here.

She was an early instar (3rd), that decided to morph rather early. A little midget. Didn't take him more than a fw minutes to find her on the zinnia I set her on.
Here is the first shot, at least he tried to kiss her first. :-)
They are Gulf Fritillaries
