I've noticed some pecan trees turning yellowish and some blackgums turning red. We are still at least a month away from cooler weather. Is this normal? We got a good amount of rain so I don't think it would be drought.
Fall colors already?
We've got that going on here, more than likely because a lack of rain for several months. Typically the trees don't colour-up here because of the cool, humid fall but this year the Maples are already showing nice colour. The Liriodendron across the street in the park lost all its leaves due to lack of water.
That must be what it is here. The rain must have been too late to do any good.
My well-watered itea is starting to show good fall color. I think it's because it's almost, um, autumn? :0)
We usually don't see fall color here until late October. It's still in the 90's.
We typically don't get fall colour worth mentioning.
The aspens in the mountains are beginning to turn gold. This is prime aspen-viewing season. Down here on the Front Range, my peach tree has been dropping a few yellow leaves.
Gosh. That time already. Why is it the older you get the faster time flows?
Time funs when you're having flies! ;0)
I've noticed the same thing on a few trees around here. Here it seems most definitely drought stress from the summer, since most of the leaves turning color and being dropped are on trees which look drought stressed. Also, I noticed they are only dropping their most stressed or damaged leaves, the rest of the leaves are still green and I don't think they will turn fall colors until our usual time of mid to late October. It seems that when we started getting some rain and cooler temperatures these drought stressed trees start going into repair mode by cutting their losses and preparing for next year (by having these leaves turn color and drop). The remaining leaves on most of these trees here look much nicer now also. Our rains didn't start coming until the last week of August, which was too late to alleviate any drought stress.
