What did you do to get them to bloom. I have 3 different kinds and did not know they bloomed.
I saw a posting somewhere else on this. But do not remeber where.

I didnt do anything. I put 1 tiny little start that I got at the hospitals horiculter sale (very small sale) it was the only one left. I didnt have anywhere to put it so I put it in that big ole pot all by itself. Boy did it look funny. And now look at it today. It is in full sun and got plenty of water. I didnt fertilize it, so I guess I got lucky. I found the tag yesterday this one is Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Purple.

rwmedic - The Ipomoea batatas you have may produce seeds, but then again it may not since it is probably from clonal stock...you should try hand pollinating the flowers...maybe you could trade some pollen with someone else who has Ipomoea batatas flowering...

Ipomoea batatas sprout from seed I shared with someone in Florida

phicks -Paul - Some strains of Ipomoea setosa can have maroon leaves and the Yellow Chinese can also produce reddish-maroon tinted leaves, especially when the leaves are not yet fully mature...

Ron,

Thanks but I wouldnt even begin to know where to start on hand pollinating. I am very new at all this. One day I will figure it out.

Can I over winter a cutting of this fine? How will it do?

rwmedic-Beck,

The Ipomoea batatas can be overwintered by bringing the plant indoors and placeing it in a brightly lit window...alternatively the tuber can be overwintered by keeping it damp so it doesn't completely dry out>then it will resprout in the Spring(!)...

Doing hand pollinating is actually very easy...just remove the stamens when they are fluffy looking with pollen and use them to paint the surface of the stigma...a light coating is all that is necessary and 1 anther will usually have enough pollen to fertilize at least several flowers...

I can send you a link to a thread where I go into the details more if you want to look at it...
