Girdled roots.

Can anything be done about root bound trees after they are in the ground? I know.... that is supposed to be taken care of before planting. I had the idea of driving a spade into the ground as close to the trunk as possible in two or three places. Would it help or create more problems? I really don't want to dig it up.

If it's only a partial girdle and has not yet totally "cut off circulation" yet you can cut the offending root with a chisel. Sometimes that works, but sometimes if you waited too long you'll be slicing the only live root left. Use a power sprayer (or an air spade if you can get one) to excavate around the base of the tree for examination.

The tree of subject is a white oak that was in a three gallon container. It's not dying, it just doesn't seem as vigorous as it should. I remember the day I planted it last year. I was in a hurry that day and didn't break up the root ball any. I think I will wait until fall and make slices in the soil near the tree with a spade or shovel. I guess in more of a star pattern rather than a circle like when root pruning. If any are circling, it would break the circle.
