Hybrid lilies

Arcata, CA(Zone 9b)

Can anyone tell me the differences between an oriental lily and a hybrid? A friend of mine said she had a few extras of hybrid. I have a few oriental and wanted to know if I should plant them in front (because they are shorter than oriental) or in back of them? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

I must admit that I'm a bit perplexed...... Can you ask your friend what kind of hybrid it is? Or how tall? What lilies do you have? If they have a name then we will have an idea of the height you can expect.

Most simply put ~ a hybrid is a cross between two plants that are in the same family but slightly different, such as the offspring from an Oriental lily and a Trumpet lily.

Moby is right in that hybrids can be any size. Your orientals can be (and probably are) hybrids too.

She doesn't know. She purchased them several years ago. Thanks anyway.

Can she tell you anything about the plants? If she has these in her garden, she should know how. tall they are. Something you should keep in mind is that most lilies will grow taller if not in full sun. It usually takes a few years for lilies to reach their mature height, it will depend on how mature the bulbs are when you get them.

Orientals are usually about 4 feet, but there are a few that go 5 and several that are quite short. Orienpets are usually very tall, some growing 7 or more feet. If its an LA,a cross between Asiatic and Longiflorum, they run about 3 to 4 feet. So, it would be a good idea to try to find out more about your friends bulbs. If you can't get any more info, I wouldn't let that stop you from getting the bulbs. Just make sure you plant them somewhere you can easily dig them up and move them should you guess wrong on the height.

She can't remember. She is 86 and had a stroke and that is the reason she is getting rid of them. Her family has placed her in a home and plans to sell the place. Her daughter brought me over 20 bulbs this morning. I planted them about an hour later. Small bulbs, all white, but they look like orientals lilies I planted last year. Thanks for all the info.
