My DH doesn't even want to hear the word plant any more. LOL... he doesn't let me go into the gardening section where ever we go cause he doesn't have the patience to wait and he sure ain't interested in looking at plants. I have to point out to him what is new in the garden and such... is wild.
I have seeds stashed all over and it's driving him nuts.
I don't dare say anything along the lines of "I need to get bulbs or whatever plant" cause he's like "you got enough already".
Home Depot bulb weakesses
Donna, I do relate, believe me! ...
Yesterday I bought some bulbs and some of DH's favourite cookies as a bribe. It partially worked! I got a side look and when I showed him the bulb packages for him to see how lovely the crocus and the freesia will look once they grow, he just said "Is that tonight's dinner?"...
Well.... go figure.LOL!
I find that freshly baked cookies or brownies go a long way, or a little extra attention.....
I also pay very, very close attention to any plant that he shows the remotest interest in, that way if I get too carried away I can add his plant to the mix or at least have been in the garden center "looking for his plant........"
LOL
plantnutga
you guys are HILARIOUS. my DH told me last night that NO MORE PLANTS can come this year.
so, i said, "okay, after the 3 boxes arrive, no more till xmas." WHAT 3 boxes, of WHAT?????
Oh, I said, bulbs, september roses on sale from Roseland, and the other box of bulbs.
Sh*t, he says. Nevermind then.
Wink ... I win. :)
WHY is it like this all over the world??? LOLOL
Don't know, MyH. But fun to know it's not just ME! Do all yours have the "refrigerator blindness" as well???
I thought it WAS just me... LOL!
Not sure what you mean by refrigerator blindness, but you mean you ask DH to look for something in the fridge and he never seems to getting round to finding it no matter how big and OBVIOUS, well.... you are not the only one, LOL!
Is that what you meant???
ABSOLUTELY what I meant. lol
We actually have that magnet on the refrigerator !

Can you try that again, plantnut? It didn't enlarge, and it sounds like a magnet we need at my house! Although, to give credit where credit is due, HE's the lunatic who came home from a trip to Home Depot with 30 pots of balloon flowers for $1.94 each!
I thought he was crazy, but boy were they gorgeous this summer.....
xxxxx, Carrie
plantnut!!!!!!!!!!! I SO have those postcards!!! she's one of my favorite sarcastic comic reliefs. Just love those cards.
Those cards are tooo delicious! ROFL!
You know, this refrigerator blindness is beginning to worry me, because I think it's only the first sign..... DH has developed sock drawer blindness and an acute ironing basket blindness too.... LOLOL
Carrie, those flowers are lovely! Great choice, your DH's!!!
carrielamont: Here's the website, go to 0023, about 1/2 way down the page.

Anne Taintor is one of my favorites, I come from a long line of smart*** women....
plantnutga
I tend to laugh at the "i dreamt my house was clean" ones. I want her to develop a gardening series. Like, if a woman was holding a soda and said, "And then, we use the back wash to kill weeds" or whatever. she's much more funny.
Yeah plant, I found it while you were revising your post, I think that's simulposting. (Either that or the much over-rated simultaneous postasm.) LOL I crack myself up! Of course I'm not happy with the $3 magnet, I want a $13 ID case and a T shirt and some invitations - but whom would I invite? And can we get the house clean in time? I am SO funny, maybe I'm delerious, better take my temp again.
Yes, what a brave, kind, smart, crazy dear husband he is! BTW, I have Balloonflower seed!
xxxx, Carrie
this is a far cry from HDepot!!! Maybe we need an Anne Taitor thread.... :O
I do have her postcard set. And other pieces. love 'em.
My husband ... him buying any kind of plant... would be like sending him to the store to buy tampons I think. He has no idea what he's looking at or for... and he has no idea of how to care for them. And getting his opinion on a plant ... he's just like "it grows right?".
And someone mentioned above that their hubby asked if the bulbs were dinner... well, my hubby has actually asked the same exact thing. The entire garden thing is just beyond his world... and he doesn't wanna know. He doesn't know a Wandering Jew from a rose bush.
But, at least he knows that I needed a green house and got me one. He's a sweety!!
Donna
See, that's what I mean!
They all whine, and moan, and don't know anything about gardening (or pretend not to, LOL), and complain, blah, blah, blah, jungle, blah, blah, blah too many, blah, blah,blah...
... but they all end up doing the right thing, LOLOL!!!
My LH knows nothing until it comes to a plant that HE likes. I already got him 2 pitcher plants, and I planted the cypress vine for him. (the cypress vine is duking it out with my passiflora as we speak)
I refuse to plant elephant ears in the ditch running along one side of our property but we have agreed on a wildflower plan there if I also put red poppies in. (that one's a while out, very labor intensive to kill the existing weed patch)
The best investment ever was a little Japanese Maple. He looks out at our back yard which I've radically changed in 2 years with God only knows how many plants and hours of labor. He sighs, "wow, that Japanese Maple really makes the yard look great!"
Gotta love him!

plant... make a lasagna bed over your weeds ... perfect bed and weeds are zero. :) piece of cake with not much work.
pegdog
I'll have to post photos when I'm ready to do the ditch- this is a "later" project....
I have plans for a couple of lasagna beds but the ditch is sloped and officially part of it is owned by the city. Also in heavy rains it has running water.
We have an oddly shaped yard, it's an acre but shaped like a long skinny piece of pizza. The house is on the "crust" side on the left. Along the top of the loooooong side is the ditch, and a street. Along the bottom of the loooooong side is our little street. Our house is surrounded by the landscaping from the former owner (grass and shrubs, some good, some b*tt ugly), further out towards "the point" is wooded, although not super dense.
We've been here 2 years, I have concentrated most of my efforts on the back yard, I need a private "oasis" feeling to be happy. Also I keep planting bulbs & iris under each tree, I'm working my way to the point. The front yard may be a major lasagna project, it will depend on if I win in my fight to get rid of the scarey ugly phallic looking hedge & shrubs.

Got any green meatballs??
ROFL.....
What are lasagna beds anyway????
OH, you are kidding ... go look at the other thread in perennials ... the one tabasco started, i think. I'd hyperlink it but i don't know how. it's all the rage of the new beds!!
....hmmmm... I don't think this would suit my varanda, LOL!
Very true. Maybe a small planter! lol
Aha! Was somebody talking about me and my lasagna bed?!! And I was just thinking I could plant some of those bulbs I (impulse) purchased at HD today in there!
FYI Here's the link http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/649906/ for the lasagna bed thread.
I can't believe that I'm wishing this beautiful weather away in hopes that fall will come soon and I can get more chopped leaves for my lasagne beds and then plant my bulbs!
Makes no sense except not much is blooming in my garden now. Very dull out there. But must watch football Saturday to bond with DH, then will ask him again if I can have the "Arbor"--it went on sale this week....!
pegdog
yes, I have giant green meatballs straddling a giant green hedge.
I'll have to find the pix to share.
It is oh-so-scarey-ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
plantnutga
Green meatballs ... there was a thread on those. Again, i don't know the hyper link thing ... sorry. send us a picture or two.
OT but useful info, sorry--.
peg-- to hyperlink just highlight the www address in the address bar. Then click to 'copy' it. Then 'paste' it into your message. Just be sure to leave spaces before and after your hyperlink to get it to work. It's easy and convenient.
LOL now I hope I got that right!
BTW I would like to see pictures of your shrubs and hedges, plantnutga! Sound very interesting. I hope you start a photo thread of your make-over when you have time....
To keep on topic--I bought more bulbs at HD. Every time my car goes past HD it automatically makes a left turn into the lot! And the bulbs are right there in front! I'm buying 'little blue bulbs' now to plant with all of my various tulips. I should start buying Deer Scram if I want to see any bloom next spring, though. They got my daylilies two nights ago!

Here's one: I was arranging my bulbs, (you know, after deciding where they go and then walking the beds, redeciding and such before even digging), and so I was out in the front beds when my mother in law drove up to visit. Nice.
She wonders what was I doing with all those rocks on top of my beds. Hmm. These are bulbs, i say. Oh, do you have snowdrops? Oh, no. Not this year. I had to quit buying when your son started noticing the abundance~ Oh, she says. Well, I'll be right back.
No joke. She went down to Home Depot and bought me 6 bags of Snowdrops!!! Love this.
Our washing machine broke last week, so we have been visiting HD and Lowes. I have managed to just 'stroll' past all the bulbs.
My Hubby was impressed!
Little did he know I ordered from the 'Alliums for Fall' co-op. And the person in charge just offered 'more' bulbs, and you know I bought more. Can't wait till they come in!
Talking of 'W' mart ... I try to stay away from that store for various reasons ... but I was there in the spring and couldn't resist their bag of 36 caladium bulbs. Only 2 different varieties came up, and they were small bulbs which gave me small plants, but I was happy ... till now that is ... now I have to DIG UP 36 caladium bulbs. :o{
And to top off all this bulb buying ... In May I dug out my very small bulb bed, which was just crammed with bulbs and MINT. I needed to kill the mint. Don't ask how I did it, but I did ... I killed that mint!!! :o)
Well, I had a trillion extra bulbs ... I gave them away to 6 SiL's and one sister. Still had extra to give some away at work.
I won' t tell hubby I bought more bulbs ...
sharon
6 SILs? Your DH (the stingey one, who won't let you buy any bulbs), has 6 DBs, and they're all married? I only have 2 DBs, only 1 is married. How many nieces/nephews does that mean you have to buy presents for? Do you like your MIL? (I mean before she bought you all the snowdrops.) My first one hated me, me second one depended on me for EVERYTHING, and my third one died before I was married to her son. just a little nosey note from...
Carrie
Carrie, I like my MIL, especially when she buys me bulbs!!
I like your MIL, pegdog! She could buy me bulbs anytime.
I'll pass it on. Actually, she grew up in Germany and misses these snowdrops. She could have planted them in her own ... she is an odd bird at times. She likes to sit and chat on Sundays so putting these in my yard is her reason to come visit us every week in early 2007. Does that make sense? She won't just come over, which is another reason my MIL is a good one. She always calls and makes "an appointment!"
Hmmmmm. I had a german MIL once - yours sounds much nicer!
xxx,Carrie
