Hickory from seed (Carya cordiformis bitternut hickory)

Southern, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have four Hickory seeds in their pods. Can anyone tell me how to try to plant them? I don't want the squirrels to eat the seed. Thank you.

Bury the seeds where you want them to grow, about 5-10cm deep. Put a sheet of chicken wire over the top to stop squirrels digging for them. Remove the chicken wire a year later, after the leaves have dropped.

Forgot to add - if you have rats deer, put a wire cage round the seedlings, too.

Thank you. No rats nor deer, just squirrels and chipmunks. Do I plant them in the pod? Is there an upside/downside ?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Take them out of the four-parted husks and plant them on their sides. But first check to see if they feel heavy (good) or light (empty or wormy), and look for worm holes. Those that fall first often are the bad ones, just like the June drop of apples.

What Guy said.
Additionally, after removing from the husk, pitch 'em in a pan of water. If they sink, they should be viable. If they float, they're probably not.
Bitternut? Probably the very last thing a squirrel will eat, but they're such dastardly creatures, they might just dig 'em up for the hell of it.
