I'm not absolutely sure it's P. balsamifera ssp trichocarpa (Black Cottonwood) but it is a common large tree in wet zones, pastures, conifer forest edges. The leaves are very large as shown by the pics of the root resprouts after mowing. These suckers were on the outside of the botanical gardens fence and is probably a month or 2 of growth. The first pic is a plant next to the railroad tracks.
Black Cottonwood for Equil
Quoting:
P. balsamifera ssp trichocarpa
When (and by whom) was it demoted from being P. trichocarpa ???
Resin
Equil, actually I am in Southwestern Canada in the Pacific Northwest (of North America). This subspecies produces a very roundish canopy, larger than other species leaves and prospers in moist locations. It typically has black spots on the leaves and other problems. The native plant person purchased most of his plants from a native plant nursery with labels. The tree had been in its position for a number of years.
Yep, looks like P. trichocarpa to me.
Equil owes me some dark chocolate!!!
