Does anyone grow Monkey Puzzle Tree / Araucaria araucana?

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

This tree has a special meaning to my family. It was a landmark we loved to look for on the way to my Grandparent's house when I was young. I would love to give one to my Mom (now in her 80's) as a gift and was wondering if anyone had seedlings for trade? My Trade List needs updating, so we can chat about what you may want.

I do, but I can't get it across the border :-( But, if you can find a large female tree in your area, look around the bottom of the trunk and crown for bright orange seeds. They are plump, bright and solid.

Hi Growin!

There aren't any growing around here, unfortunately. Do they come up pretty easily from seed? Perhaps I can mail order some seed(?) I can ask in the Seed Trading forum also. Who knows, I may get lucky! Thanks, and if I find some I'll davemail you for some instruction in growing them.

Sure, not a problem. I do know someone who has them in small containers but he must go through red-tape to get it across the border. He may be willing if you give him a call - www.tropic.ca

I got one for $15 on eBay last year. About a foot tall and it's doing great.

You're right Dybbuk, I have seen several on e-bay, seeds too.

I'm looking around. I also posted in seed trading, somewhere there might have some for me!
Thanks for your help.

I wish you luck. Too bad because I have a large bowl of seed in the fridge that I'll be planting up shortly.

If you don't have luck with seed and would rather buy a plant, Forest Farm has them. Unfortunately this one they don't have in the tube size, only in a larger pot so it's $29.

Thanks all!

I was able to find someone with some seed in the Seed Trading forum! We are putting together a trade now.

ecrane3, I love ForestFarm! I have purchased from them before and will again. I will watch this fall's catalog, who knows, they may have tubes coming up for next year.

Thanks again!
