Borers on a 'Diablo' Ninebark

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I am really more upset that this could happen than did since I hadn't seen them listed as a problem.

It's turned into an Eightbark . . .

I'd think it should re-grow from the roots OK (though if it is a grafted cultivar, the rootstock shoots might be different).

I will spray it will Onyx which is one of the better borer insecticides right now and hope for the best. It had been flagging on the one side since spring and I thought it was from some root damage since I dug up a shrub near that side just before.

What about one of those soil drench insecticides?

Merit would probably work - I don't have any right now, I will this fall.

Borers probably aren't a problem, unless you stress the plant for some reason. I'm with Resin; this kind of plant will normally rebound with normal attention to moisture/fert, especially if you knock off the pest.

I'll treat the pest. Not that I have a lot of money in that shrub, but I do have 3 others. I'm not sure what borers they get, but I did have this in my yard recently.

Since Physocarpus is in the Rosaceae, you might lean in that direction for a culprit. And there are lots of them.

If you saved the little bugger, send him to your Extension Service diagnostic lab for ID. Pirone's book on trees and shrubs might offer some advice as well. Physocarpus doesn't show up in too many texts; Johnson & Lyon (Insects That Feed On Trees and Shrubs) has no listing for it at all.
