Do lilies do well in containers?

Dalton, GA(Zone 7a)

I ran into a great buy on Stargazers at Lowe's a while back, and got one for a friend (along with 3 for me!). But we can't find a good place to put just one lily in her yard. Putting it in a pretty pot would solve that problem but will it do well in a pot?

Yes it will.

Thanks. What size pot would you put one lily in?

It's usually suggested to plant lilies in deeper pots several inches below surface (4-6+"). Pic is potted lily (2nd year, same pot).

How do you overwinter your pots?

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I plant almost all of my lilies in pots. When they are blooming, that way you can bring them in and enjoy them inside, you can move the pots around in the yard. My yard is the common three tiered approach. Tall shrubs in the back...liles ( day and oriental), in the middle, and o yes...the ever popular lirope, lining the beds. My middle layer is almost all pots and are hidden by the lirope. I do have some spots, like by the front door. I do dig a hole for the pot so i can keep a blooming daylily their at all times. I have my last two pots of orientals in as we speak . After three or so years...I do usually move them to the yard. They are so tall by then...cutting them and bringing them in, leaves MORE than enough stem. I just leave mine in the pots overwinter...dont really water them. Up they come in the spring.

Don't know if we can do that in 7a. My friend does have a little storage room on her carport - maybe she could put the pot in there for the winter.

What is important is that you have the pot somewhere that it doesn't freeze the bulb. However, they do need to go through a cold period. A cold garage would do or you could plant the pot in your garden.

I overwinter large pots of lilies in in a covered stairwell that allows basement entry from outside. A battery fed thermometer alerts me when the temperature dips dangerously low. This area is great for forcing spring bulbs as well.

Hi - I am in 7b - I use terra cotta 'lily pots' - that is a pot with straight sides - you can get them in various sizes. I've bought them from Home Depot. I have one pot - about 12" dia. x 12" tall with about 10 lilies in it. Also several smaller lily pots with 4 or 5 lilies... I snug them up by a really big, old azalea to go through the winter. No other protection. They come back bigger and more every spring.

Here is a picture of one off the net - mine are plain terra cotta with a rolled edge on the top but you'll get the idea of what you are looking for at the store.
