Ailanthus

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What is the best way to get rid of seedlings of Ailanthus altissima AND Aralia spinosa? These seedlings are all over my brother's field. He has read about a product that cost $400.00 a gallon. Anything cheaper and just a good?

The only thing I know of is Ortho Brush-B-Gone. You can buy it at Wal-Mart and Home Depot.

Both don't like regular short mowings! So it should weaken them.

Don't count on that weakening the Heavenly tree, It will just come up six feet away or with six more trunks. Best way is to dig them out, and spray anything that comes up from roots or seed for a couple of city blocks....

You might want to mix some of Spreader-Sticker in with the herbicide just to make sure you get full coverage.

Thank you very much...I will pass this information along. Boy it really is a WEED isn't it.

I don't know anything that can out-do regular mowings either. I don't know about the Aralia but here is a Tree-of-heaven in all of its glory according to this resident, but its still a big weed.

Levi, what you're seeing in both cases probably are not seedlings, but root sprouts. They have the entire ortet tree's root mass at their disposal and thus are much more resilient than seedlings. If you herbicide them, be prepared for damage to the original tree. In the case of the Ailanthus, that might be a very good thing, but if the Aralia is the native A. spinosa (not the Japanese or Chinese species) you would be killing something with good wildlife and ornamental value.

We don't have this tree around here, but I get the feeling it's coming.
