they are stacked up in the corner, stashed away in the bathroom, shoved under the bed...you know, GARDENING MAGAZINES!!! Which ones are your favorite? I simply love "Garden How-To". I also love "Birds and Blooms"--just for the beautiful pictures. I also like our local "Louisiana Gardener", What do you have??
O.K. So we all have 'em...
Yep, not only do I have them but I have too many of them! In an effort to clean up around here I've decided to get rid of many I've collected for years...back issues of Mother Earth (to '82), Wildlife in NC (full yr subscriptions back to '86), Birds and Blooms, Organic Gardening, Horticulture, Carolina Gardener! sheesh. I hate to send them to the re-cycle bins and have asked several teachers if they could use them in classrooms but no one is interested. Such a waste, eh?
Trish knows for certain, but I definitely enjoy reading Southern Living and Better Homes & Gardens. We also are subscribed to Family Handyman, which has some interesting stuff sometimes.
I think we're subscribed to others, but these are the ones that I actually read on a frequent basis.
Garden How-To is my favorite, OK so it's the only one I'm subscribed to...If this thread takes off I may have to sign up for more!
Julie
Julie, Have you ever won anything from the give aways? Bye, Lisa
I guess my favorite is,and always has been,"Countryside".
It,s the one I have kept since the 70's.They are taking over the place.I did miss a few years in the eighties while chasing the almighty dollar.
At one time I saved Organic Gardening but just think it has turned into a yuppie rag.
BTW....CS has a pretty good forum at countrysidemag.com
Some family fights there over religion and politics sometime but lots of good info.
PLEASE DON'T TOSS THEM OUT !!!
I take mine to the hospitals and nursing homes...They are LOVE by the folks there. When they get too tattered they use them for crafts classes!!!!
Kimdc Pick up a copy of 'Counrty magazine'!!!
Horseshoe, Don't throw them. If no one wants them or you can't find homes for them all, I will send postage for them!
I love them all. Horticulture, Birds and Blooms, Garden Shed, Garden Gate, Garden How To, and many others.
my favorite is Garden Design. They have some really kewl looking gardens from all over the world. I just wish i had time to read the articles, not just look at the pics! ;]
they do have lots of info too! =]
Mercy. I like the idea about the hospitals and nursing homes...will check into it. G_mick...postage would cost(!) but if there is anything specifically you'd like please let me know. (the majority are "wildlife in NC" and about 20 or so Mother Earths, maybe more. The rest are misc issues, Birds and Blooms, Horticulture.)
I too am guilty! But I try to pass them on once theyre over 3 months old. (I saved them thinking I would use them as reference... but I never do!!)
A dear friend uses hers for seed envelopes! Which I think is a great idea, and quite fitting!! (she does the origami envelopes)
I pass mine like Kimdc does... To the nursing homes, the Veterans Hospital..... and also, there are some nonprofit organizations for the elderly who were delighted to get them.. and even offered to pick them up!
When they start refusing, Im going to save on my ink cartridges and start doing the seed envelopes!
Oh, my favorite topic. I love Southern Living and Garden Shed. I also subscribe to Country Living Gardener, but not too enthused about it.
The one I really want is Fine Gardening - but too expensive! DH loves Handyman. I can't throw them away either - stacked in baskets in just about every room in the house.
Grits
Organic Gardening used to be my favorite, but as gone2seed notes, they have changed the format for the worse and I no longer subscribe. I have issues that go back to 1975 when they were known as 'Organic Gardening and Farming'. They were/are great reference mags.
Horseshoe; if you (or anyone else) have any of the older issues of Organic Gardening, when they were the 6" x 9" size, I would be very happy to pay the postage to have these.
Also, anyone who ships magazines through the USPS can get a 'book rate' which is cheaper than regular freight.
Oh no, you would have to bring this up! I am the most magazine buying and hoarding weirdo around. I have them from way back. I have to make shelves for them along the walls. My first Gardening Mags were Organic Gardening and I still get it but will not re-subscribe when it runs out. I love Kitchen Garden, Herb Companion, Herb Quartely, Fine Gardening and more. I have had subscriptions to many more, I have not heard of GardenHowTo and Countryside. I do have old Organic Gardening when they were tiny. And if I ever get brains and get rid of some I will remember the hospital idea! (PS I need a bumper sticker that says, my other car is a magazine)
Chard, This is the link for their web site:http://www.cuc.com/ctg/cgi-bin/Gardening/contact_club/AAAksrACwAAACDjAAl
I have been with them since their first magazine. I really like them. The only complaint I have is that it is not a monthly magazine! It seems forever between issues! Bye, Lisa
Oh-oh, just clicked on to their web site (I don't visit it often 'cause I am always here) I wanted to check out what web links they like...seems like I'll have to forgive them....they just don't know about Dave yet...Lisa
Since I have tons of seed catalogs that I save for the information in them, and the great photos, my favorites below include more than the garden magazines:
Countryside and Small Stock Journal
Domestic Rabbits (ARBA Publication)
Sheep! Magazine
Pennsylvania Magazine
Horse Illustrated
National Geographic
Lancaster Farming
Trish :)
Lisa,
Where do you find the Louisiana Gardener?
I can't possibly throw out my already read magazines. Every winter I go through them all again for ideas and inspirations. My all time favorites are:
Birds and Blooms
Gardening How To
Garden Shed
Garden Gate
Those are the top 4. I have post it notes sticking out of the tops listing subjects or inspiring pictures.
Dene
Lisa, I have not won anything as of yet, I keep trying! I finally asked to be included in the home test thing they have. I had been getting their gardening books (the large green ones) I really enjoy them, I have about 10 now, but then I realized how much I was paying for those! Their website was how I found DG, SMSpear1 had a link to her have & want list posted, and I've been here ever since. I tried to post about DG there, but most of it got removed. I think a couple slipped by though. I still pop in every once in a while just to see whats going on, but not as much activity as here or as much information! Julie
Dene, Hi the web site is:louisianagardener.com I buy my copy at the feed store, but you can subscribe to it. Bye, Lisa
I forgot to mention another that I'm subscribed to: The Farmer's Almanac Gardener's Companion. I only subscribed this year, and have received only one issue (They make 4 issues per year). I read just about every page of the magazine and it was very enjoyable with lots of nice articles and pictures. Additionally, it has charts of when to plant your stuff by the moon, if you're interested in that.
I recommend the magazine. http://www.almanac.com/ I'm talking about the "Gardener's Companion", not their regular farmer's almanac (which I find boring).
Dave
I subscribe to Mother Earth News and Organic Gardening but I buy whatever else catches my eye. BTW, I do agree with all of you about Organic Gardening. Too much politically correct BS!!! I just skip over that stuff and read the gardening info.
What I usually do before I dispose of my gardening magazines is to go through them and cut out the articles and info that I want to keep. I keep all of this info in huge 3 inch binders and have everything filed under various topics.

I saw someplace where people were trading used magazines and books. We should start a book/magazine trade forum here.I would LOVE to trade. If we don't do it and anyone is interested please contact me for trading!!!
o.k. I'm guilty too! I have tons of magazines old and new,in closets, shelves, even in old metal buckets(they say nice and straight in there). I'd have to say my favorites are Garden Gate, and GreenPrints(I can't put it down). Just like you Dave I just started getting Gardeners Companion, Early spring 2001 was the latest one and your right lots and lots of good stuff! A little FYI from GreenPrints: Chicken Soup For The Gardeners Soul is coming to bookstores in 2 weeks!!!!! I know I will buy a copy of this one....
Ok, I'm familiar with most of these magazines (I didn't work at a Barnes & Noble for 2 years without some benefits!), but the Garden How To is unfamiliar to me. Can someone either let me know a website, or fill out a subscription card for me? (I'll try any magazine that's so highly recommended!). Thanks! Kathy
Hi! My regular is Amateur Gardening. And occasionally Garden Answers. I had quite a number of magazines built up too. So I very heroically sifted through them at the end of the year. I also had difficulty disposing off them. It seems a shame when magazines aren't cheap. However I was able to take some in to one of the local hospitals. I won a small trellis (I put it up next to my back door) with one magazine. I also was on the Readers Panel of one magazine for 6 months and got it free. Then found I didn't really like it very much. Can't remember it's name now. But the front cover looked very artificial. They had people in their gardens weeding, tending containers etc. I looked at them and thought, they're not gardeners! They were all glammed up. The magazine later confirmed that they were models.
