CLOSED: What Is It?

Walnut Grove, MO

My neighbors found this on the road while walking this evening. I have never seen one before. Do you know what it is? It was about 2 inches x 3/8 inches. It is more orange than this shot.

Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar - pretty cool, aren't they?

That's a beautiful butterfly... haven't seen any here, though

RU going to put it back on its food plant so it can go on to complete its life cycle? It may be getting ready to pupate, but just to be safe.... :-)

Thank you so much. I am calling her this am and suggesting she try wild cherry. I looked them up and that is one of the trees listed. I know it has to be some sort of native thing because she found it in the road while walking and lots of cherry trees are around here so that is a possibility.

When the Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar turns completely yellow (it is greenish before that), it should pupate very soon, so that particular one is probably pupating by now (or just about to). Host plants I have listed include Spicebush, Sassafras, Red Bay and Swamp Bay. I haven't yet heard of cherry trees being used.

That was probably why they saw it crawling on the ground. They often do not pupate on the same plant where they dined, but move to another.
