It's some sort of Dracaena or Cordyline, hopefully someone else will know which one. As far as care, make sure you don't water it too much--I don't think these need a ton of water and if you give them too much the roots will rot (I had a different sort of Dracaena and killed it that way).

I think this is what we call Corn Plant ,Dracaena Fragrans.
Easy to care for. Be sure not to overwater. Thats about all I know. I had one that got about 5' in the corner of my dinning room, medium light .
Hope that helps

Thanks for the help. What could I do if i have to much water in there now? Could I take some of the dirt out and let it dry or would I be better off just getting some new stuff?

Oh...One more question...When you put a plant like that in a new pot do you want to pack it down it there?

Hi Amy,

I would just leave it alone and don't water it until it is really dry. Just poke your finger down into the soil and when you think it needs a little water, water it gently.

Packing the soil down will not hurt it at all. That type of plant needs a strong compaction to hold the plant upright.

BTW, it's a nice looking specimen and I love your pot. :-)

It looks like one of the canes is dying. Is there a hole in the bottom of the pot? It's better to allow it to dry out between watering and like SoCal said use your finger to see if it is moist. If you take your finger out of the soil and there is soil attached to your finger, it's moist.
